Isn't that because Dan hasn't open-sourced his project yet and doesn't let anybody else contribute?

FYI "darling" can also be used with a spouse or romantic partner. It has a similar meaning in this case, where "darling of the group" means everyone really likes them, even if not sexual.

And he has turned over Mastodon to a non-profit company which should be able to gain more resources to develop Mastodon.

Hmm, while there have been 158 contributors, a very small percent were from the other developers: https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/graphs/contributors
