Who can tell me about Diaspora and Friendica and why, once again, when people are looking for Fediverse alternatives, we the geeks befuddle the masses with this “choose randomly from thousands of servers with no guidance” thing. Most social media users think servers are the people you tell how you want your steak cooked.

@jillrhudy Decentralization is a concept which can sound complex. But actually, people are already familiar with it, as the most commonly used service on the internet is fully decentralized: the emails.
And it sounds very natural to people from a gmail email address to write to people using a yahoo email address.
Maybe there is a page explaining the most common email providers out there, with pros and cons. But email became *the* service without it anyway. -
@jillrhudy I’ve had my primary home on Friendica, develop on the Friendica code base periodically, and write a mobile and desktop client for Friendica. If a non-techie friend asks me which fediverse platform they should try other than Bluesky I say Mastodon. At this time it is going to be a better experience and a lot more people have heard of it. I want Friendica to eventually be in the same place but it’s not right now. As to Diaspora, it was my first fediverse experience and I liked it a lot and enjoyed coding on it for a brief period of time. However I wanted more integration with other federation systems and social network integrations so Friendica it was for me. I only mention it for historical purposes at this point :(.

@fla @jillrhudy I don’t know why people have a mental block making that jump. It may be that Web 2.0 has always been about the site walled garden and that it what they are expecting. Most people just have GMail as email at this point as well. Practically speaking I always thought I’d account portability was a bit better we could easily say it doesn’t matter and make it more opaque that they are selecting a server in the default case. I think Solid did something like that.

@jillrhudy I was on Diaspora when it was in beta and Mastodon for at least 7 years. I couldn't get Frendica web to work for me! Also, I believe it isn't helpful to invent a new name for servers (pod, instance...) because it just muddies the water further.
Diasp.org is shutting down, and I started looking for another "pod" but haven't yet found a list of them with details on each. Maybe @hankg can help?

@randulo @jillrhudy I’m really not in the D* space anymore but I will be creating an account somewhere to I can test federation. A lot of people seem to be moving to glasswings so that was where I was going to look first.
