Occurs to me GenX boys grew up on a lot of TV shows from the 50s-60s because reruns were the only fun thing to watch after school. (Kid-specific programming was far from 24 hrs a day)
So we absorbed a lot of “Father Knows Best” type tropes where the man has an inherent authority & privilege. -
@andrewhinton I think it explains a lot that most of my early childhood american syndicated TV diet was Bewitched, and Norman Lear shows like Maude.
I'm not saying they made me gay, but I'm not not saying that either

@octothorpe Ha! The Lear shows were a nice antidote for me especially give my parents’ awful politics.

@andrewhinton Ah! My parents' awful politics didn't really happen until after I moved to the US. Frankly, considering all the things we did I *still* don't know how it happened.
I'm not saying they were in any way 'progressive', but simply living outside of your home country amongst people who didn't look like you, whilst integrating into that society (ex: language, food, culture) is something.
