I really hope the fediverse can get more traction among “normies”. But one thing I have been wondering is why the community on Bluesky (which I think is also part of the fediverse?) is so much worse than Mastodon?

I’ve received more hate and harassment on Bluesky than Twitter. The people are truly awful on that app, but every time Musk does something usage balloons. I don’t understand why people jump to Bluesky when Mastodon is here and so much better imo!

Been thinking about this a long time, and think that the primary reason is people want an app that looks like Twitter. It doesn't take long to get used to the Mastodon UI, but it is enough of a difference that people give up and seek something more familiar.

@mastodonmigration @taylorlorenz Agreed. People switch looking for Twitter the way it used to be pre-Musk, but the amount of work it takes to build your feed around your interests is a big hurdle. I watched someone leave twitter and try fediverse on mastodon. It did not work because he wanted instant gratification.

There may be something to that, but suspect that feed building would not be as much of an issue as simply the unfamiliarity of the way information is presented. Could be wrong.
-
@taylorlorenz I believe the primary difference is the algorithmic feed. People join Bluesky because they want to interact with an algorithm. The algorithm learns what sort of feed captures your attention and curates that feed to maximize engagement. Users of Bluesky will instinctively tailor posts to appeal to the algorithm since the algorithm controls visibility. Mastodon has no algorithm so people join mastodon to interact directly with other humans.

@mastodonmigration @yappari @taylorlorenz Feed building also got way easier with Mastodon 4.3.
-
@nul42 Please don’t spread disinformation otherwise you’re better on Truth Social or Twitter. That’s not true. Bluesky literally defaults to a feed the same way Mastodon does. There’s custom feeds which are mostly made by members of the community and third party devs. We don’t like liars or people too lazy to research before making statements

How's that? My instance hasn't moved to 4.3 yet so I'm not familiar with the changes.

@mackaj @mastodonmigration @yappari You get suggestions for accounts relevant to your bubble and instance in your timeline if it is empty.

If you want the Fediverse to expand for white people sure, I hope you get that and you guys will be happy. But there’s plenty of reasons of why not especially in regard to Black and Brown folks. While not without flaws, Bluesky has been infinitely more welcoming to minorities and the younger generations.

@frumble @mackaj @mastodonmigration @yappari Wow. I didn't even notice this until now. See https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/10/mastodon-4.3/ specifically "we’ve introduced a little carousel with follow recommendations that will appear above the first post older than four hours" (with surrounding text explaining why it is designed this way).
