Look, I'm gonna lay this out on the line:

@gudenau Frankly, the fact that the culture here expects there to be tools you bolt-on to make this work the way you need it to is a big part of the problem.
"Works on my machine" is a delightful way of ensuring you don't take ownership of issues.

@TechConnectify I admire what you do. I love both of your channels and will go out of my way to make time to watch your videos.
You are not whining, but exposing true deficiencies, both in many people here and in the platform, itself. It is absolutely not designed for creatives with large followings.
You do what you need to do to maintain your mental health. I'll keep watching even if you don't engage here.
Keep up the exceptional work.

@TechConnectify
Holy shit, 1:1 ratio ratio?
That's so much worse than I expected.
This platform hides so much from so many. -

@ftg I feel I need to clarify what I mean by "push me away"
I use the term "gaslit" a lot here and, well, that's because there's a lot of people who will respond to my negative experiences with what I would call very qualified empathy.
Something like "I'm sorry you're experiencing this, have you tried X?" is not really what I need in the moment. It's "works on my machine" but said only slightly more tactfully.

@ftg I understand where this comes from - people who believe in this place want me to stay here.
But what I'm trying to articulate is that expecting me to patch this place up to meet my needs is an unreasonable expectation. This is plainly evident to me, and it's really the whole "just pick an instance! it doesn't matter. but also it does!" confusion rehashed without any understanding of what that was so off-putting in the first place.

@TechConnectify just wanted to say that I’ve been a big fan for years. It’s always a highlight of my week when you post a new, thoroughly researched, engaging, and funny video for us all to watch. I’ve often been the sender and sometimes on the receiving end of links to your videos on various topics. Keep doing what you’re doing and manage your interactions here how ever you see fit.

@TechConnectify Nothing like this should affect someone's mental health. Like you did with "bird site", it is the time to leave (maybe mastodont has the same thing as other platforms to disable but not delete an account ?). If a platformed is dommed to never evolve, then there is no need to stay and try to make it bettter.

@TechConnectify social media is a double edged sword

@TechConnectify Sorry to hear it, and that this platform is contributing to it. The reason I shifted to mas.to was seeing you embrace it. But no matter the platform, if it’s not working out, let it be and seek calmer waters.

@TechConnectify Yeah, that's a problem I see with the fediverse in general.
After some initial excitement, all Lemmy did was make me use Reddit **more** again. Because Reddit is **less** biased and controlled than Lemmy. Which really says something, and is quite depressing in itself.
And it's the same with Bluesky vs Mastodon: Bluesky, despite a strong inherent bias, does not mind someone not engaging in the bias remotely as much.

@TechConnectify I just don't understand how modern X could be any better. If some supremacist/bigot goes after you there, they'll encourage it and boost the troll. Then probably punish you for defending yourself.
But even there the old default was to block DMs from people you don't follow. I'd highly advise turning that setting on.
Maybe you just need a traditional blog with commenting disabled. And then you could set it up to propagate to your Mastodon account via a bot. Read only mode

@zephyrxero what makes you think I'm using X?

ZephyrXeroreplied to Technology Connections on last edited by
@TechConnectify then a better example... How do you stomach your YouTube comments? I can't believe you get more grief here than there.
But to see you ripping on how terrible you think this place is implies you're comparing it to what Twitter used to be.
Threads and BlueSky won't save us. For profit companies will never be the good stewards of social media we want from them. Look at Reddit.
Just like using Linux, the freedoms of open source do have a cost in patience. But they're worth it

@zephyrxero First, and I mean this sincerely and not to attack, don't assume those costs in patience are worth it for everyone. They are not to me.
And as I have said - YouTube grants me the affordance of filtering and sorting. I do not have to see every comment that comes my way, and the filters (which I have done precious little work to curate other than add a few banned words!) are amazing at catching jerks while also letting critical but kind comments through.

@TechConnectify I know this feel. Somehow mastodon has gotten the bad attitude from hellsite.

Technology Connectionsreplied to Bakunin Boys last edited by
@bakuninboys It's a different flavor. Very rarely are things here overtly bothersome, but there's a whole helluvalotta people who post in such a way that their grievances are always clear.
