Steven Beschloss lauds Jimmy Carter on his 100th birthday:
"In times like these, when we have reason to worry about demagogic, hateful leadership that attracts far too many Americans, it’s a gift to reflect on the humane quality of a man like Jimmy Carter."
I second this. When I think of Carter, I always think of being in grad school in Toronto when he was president, one of very few Southerners in my program.

I well remember a classmate from liberal Boston, who was, as far as I knew, politically somewhat to the left — I remember her walking up to me one day and mercilessly mocking Carter's and his family's Southern accent.
I thought to myself as she did that: Does she not realize this is how my family sounds, too? And that I might find her caricature and prejudice offensive?
We need to learn to build better bridges. Carter is a shining example of that, it seems to me.

My family thought very highly of Carter, by the way. We voted for him with enthusiasm. Two of my father's cousins told me some years ago that their father, my grandfather's oldest brother, announced he intended to live long enough to cast his final vote for Carter. And he did just that: he died on election day 1976 after casting his vote in Red River Parish, Louisiana, just a month short of 100 years of age.

@wdlindsy My very first presidential vote.

@wdlindsy Carter is my favorite president because he did what was right. The media still doesn’t grasp that. His life after his term is an example for everyone.

@Beachbum A good vote to remember, for sure — a good man.

@caseyjonesed He did. That could be his epitaph: He did what was right. I think the media simply cannot grasp people who try to live their lives according to integrity and passionate commitment to principles in the way Carter has done.

@Arqtec America has broken my heart over and over, from my very first involvement in presidential politics working for Eugene McCarthy's campaign right to the present.

"Carter’s boldest advocacy, of course, has been on behalf of a new approach by the United States government to the Middle East—an approach that respects the need for the United States to be a honest player in the region where he did more than any other president to promote peace."

"Since Carter left the White House in 1981, successive presidents have gotten more wrong than right in the region, where the threat of all-out war is now mounting and where the Israeli assault on Gaza has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians—most of them women and children—since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks."

@wdlindsy Like I know this is kinda reinforcing - but...
Bit talk comin' from people who say "tha cah is pahked in havahd yahd"
I'm grew up in area with a t'ick accent ya der hey. We had a road literally called "truway" (as in "through way"). America tons of migrants, and that feeds the great linguistic diversity. (I DO admit to prejudice against the south :()
I agree about Carter. He is a mensch. Better than other pres since I've been alive. Not necessarily in office, but as a human.

@wdlindsy This makes me think about how Carter has said he wants to live long enough to vote for Kamala. I hope he can, it would be beautiful and sort of complete the legacy of your great uncle.

@allwelikeworms Yes, whenever I think of that story about my great-uncle (of whom I have fond memories), I think how amazing it is that it parallels what Jimmy Carter has said about intending to live long enough to vote for Kamala Harris.

@allwelikeworms A mensch: that sums it up so well. Few "titles" given to anyone are more satisfying, I think.
