Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) has just published results of a new survey of more than 5,000 Americans, which finds that though a majority of Americans reject political violence a concerning percentage of Americans, particularly Republicans ...

@LindaCollins11 It is that, for sure.

@mikewaghorne A very large percentage of him, by PRRI's own reckoning: white Christian nationalists.

@wdlindsy You realize that stat isn't as far apart as you think it is.

@nomore If you are referring to 12 and 23, my grade-school math taught me that 24 is twice 12. I'm not sure how you would know what and how I think, when you're responding to a report by PRRI that I'm paraphrasing — but I'm inclined to continue thinking that the basic math I learned in grade school continues to count correctly.

@vees Or more, since PRRI finds that nearly forty percent of Americans lean authoritarian.

The end of democracy if he does, but there has been a lot of positioning to sow distrust towards this end.

@wdlindsy 77% not likely vs 88%. Only a small bit more likely to accept tyranny.

@wdlindsy These “Americans” must be discovered, monitored and contained so they do no harm to peaceful people anywhere.

@Runyan50 I definitely think we should have our eyes wide open about who many of us have now shown ourselves to be, as we unmask ourselves in the Trump era. My problem with the idea of monitoring and containing — if that means physical containment — is that we then adopt their tactics and become like them. I don't want that to happen to me and to us.

@nomore PRRI finds that nearly 40% of Americans incline in the direction of authoritarianism. To my way of thinking, that's a considerable proportion.

@serendip1959 Yes, you're right.

@wdlindsy I would be happy if containment meant they could not spread their seditious behavior by holding federal level public office. We’ll probably never rid ourselves of the flag waving Confederate worshippers.

@Runyan50 I think you're right about the flag-waving Confederate worshippers. I grew up in the South during the Civil Rights period, and came to the conclusion that some of my fellow citizens just will not ever change, will not see and do better. I've concluded that the best path a society seeking to be sane and productive can follow vis-a-vis folks like that is to step around them and leave them behind in the dustbin of history.

@wdlindsy and that's the real story. Authoritarianism is a threat to my life. May they water the tree of liberty.

@nomore Water the tree of liberty? With blood? I've lost the thread of points you're making here. I do not understand.
