I just read a post by someone bemoaning the loss of connection to Black and other communities as they shift to allow-list-only instances. I want to share my (slightly edited) reply more widely, because I think this is a thing many white people on here don't understand:
allow-list-only instances can (and likely will) still choose to federate with instances that don't allow unacceptable behavior toward them.
if you're on an instance that is allowing white supremacy to run rampant, then yes, you will lose access to Black and other communities negatively impacted by whiteness. is this an acceptable tradeoff for you? are you willing to push your instance mods to do better, or move to an instance where they will?
and if not, you need to sit with what that says about you. because you are very literally choosing to be part of the problem.

listen to people with less privilege than you. their expectations are not mysterious or convoluted. they want to be treated with respect.
is your instance blocked by instances that are safe for Black folks? find out why - and take the reasons seriously, rather than finding a reason to dismiss them. ask the mods to do better. if they dismiss the reasons, congratulations, you're on a white supremacist instance. what are you going to do about that?
