@actuallyautistic To all late-(self)diagnosed autists:
Right after my diagnosis I noticed sensory things that were really bugging me. Especially everything regarding sound, light and tactile sense. I kinda wrote that off to "Yeah, you now know you're autistic, of course you just look out for these things."
But as further the diagnosis lies in the past, I continue to notice those things unconcsiously. I start noticing when I'm overwhelmed by sounds, for example. The thing is: I never noticed that all this was overwhelming to me BEFORE my diagnosis. I knew that something was draining energy from me, but I was never really able to tell.
Did you have a similar experience? That only after the diagnosis you actually started to notice that all those sensory issues are actually what is overwhelming to you? That you just didn't get, that they are contributing to your mental drain out?

@vger There's a similar thing in hatching as trans. Once you admit to yourself your transitude, you start noticing issues that you kept eagerly masking away even from yourself.

@vger The commonality might be that you're not trying to apply a stereotype of a Platonic Neurotypical Solid when analysing yourself anymore.

@riley @actuallyautistic Oh, there's definitely overlap there. I'm re-evaluating my sexuality as well. Just trying out different thoughts and questioning my behaviour. I'm at the point where I lean towards the asexual spectrum and also consider myself to be non-binary. Basically I'm going the full route of re-discovering myself.

@vger Good luck!

@riley @vger @actuallyautistic Is this perhaps why bigots have this idea of transsexuality being somehow infectious? Like maybe they know they're masking and don't want someone collapsing their facade?
-
@cybervegan It might be a supporting factor, but the main reason is, the Republicans have designated trans people as an official scapegoat, and released a lot of different "justifications" for this. The Covid epidemic contributed to "infection" sounding scary.

@riley @vger @actuallyautistic Similar to what the UK Conservative party was doing before they lost recently. Stupid arguments about bathrooms and birth gender, "legitimate concerns" and so on.

@cybervegan Finding scapegoats is a common strategy of the right-wing scoundrels. It's one of the major forces in keeping authoritarian structures together: the authoritarian leader's responsibility is to appoint the scapegoat, and the authoritarian followers then ritualistically attack it, while rejoicing that they have such a great leader who would always know who the scapegoat is.
