2-3 bonnes questions.

@SillobreMVC could you possibly ask those questions here? Being on mobile and an exclusively English speaker, I can't translate the entire blogpost easily to be able to read it. My Mastodon instance has built in translation, which allowed me to read your post.
I understand if you don't care to do that, I just figured I'd ask.

@BeAware
https://grompf3.tumblr.com/post/725635159615062016/bloqu%C3%A9-par-2-des-plus-grosses-instances-mastodon2 of the biggest French-speaking Mastodon sites had blocked me. Their users, even those who followed me or whom I followed, could not interact with me or see my messages.
And I must stress one point: there had been NO information about these blockages, or more exactly these "suspensions". I was not aware of it. And neither were the users of the 2 big authorities that had done this.
-
@BeAware One of the 2 instances unblocked me.
The other partially unblocked me. I'm now "limited" by this instance (Mamot).I can see the people I follow. And my followers can see me. But other users of the Mamot instance can't see me.
It was a message from 1 Mamot user, in an exchange where we were both mentioned, that tipped me off. He wasn't seeing my messages.
-
@BeAware And when I checked, in fact, when you search for my profile from Mamot, it says: "This profile has been masked by mamot fr moderation".
So if someone really wants to see what I post, it's possible. But you have to look. And you need to know what to look for. Here we have a user who didn't see my messages in a discussion where we were both. It's not very practical for chatting...
-
My questions are as follows:
1. What's happening to my account? Has Mamot restricted me on purpose?
2. Why doesn't anyone know about this kind of practice?
-
@SillobreMVC Yeah, this is an unfortunate side effect to federation...
I have also been blocked and limited by a number of instances on which I had several friends, severing relationships with no discussion from the instance admin.
It's disappointing, but unfortunately I don't see a way around it unless the instance notifies you ahead of time.
-
@SillobreMVC 1. It's a moderation action that a mastodon admin, assumedly mamot has put on your account. Yes, it was on purpose, possibly due to a report one of their users made on one of your posts.
2. People don't know about it because most people aren't administrators or moderators so they don't see the backend of things like this.
I'd say the only way to know for sure is to message the admins, in this case it'd be LaQuadrature. I'm not sure if they'll respond though. Most admins or moderators don't respond to users that they've blocked or limited.

@BeAware
We hear about choice and freedom.
People would be free to choose their instance.
But people are not informed about what the administrators of their bodies do. -
@BeAware And, in fact, this instance welcomed a lot of users when the media started talking about Mastodon, around 2017. As a result, it's one of the biggest French-language forums.
And as a result, those who are blocked are cut off from a large proportion of Mastodon's French-speaking users...

@SillobreMVC I totally understand the frustration. I was blocked by an instance from which I already had several friends on with no notification or discussion. Just noticed that one day I lost 10 follow relationships at once and investigated to see who I've lost.
They've since limited me, but I still cannot interact with my friends.
