Grim!
If you can, and you feel inclined to, I suggest spending as many of your cycling-dollars as possible at your local bike shop, because lacking a local bike shop is very bad and will have long-lasting negative impact on your neighborhood.
The nearest bike shop to me is nearly a 5km walk/ride. That’s simply too far.

And if you work at a local-bike-shop, you _really_ gotta do all you can to counter the stereotype of the asshole bike shop worker. Customers can simply just add-to-cart on Amazon if they don’t like your attitude.
Don’t use jargon, meet your customers where they are, be encouraging, be kind.
I must admit, as a young bike mechanic, I occasionally fell into the stereotype, and I feel bad about it. I hope it wasn’t too often.
