I guess the good part about the incredibly dopey TikTok shutdown is now we get to teach all the teens to use VPNs
-
@kissane Or just how to use a webapp. . . .
-
@tyler That's not going to help without a way around the geo-lock.

@kissane Just can't leave kids alone can you?
-
@ossyrefugee Oh look, the creep brigade, right on schedule.
(Bystanders, this appears to be a brand-new harassment account.)

@kissane
I think teens have long been aware of VPNs. They're much more informed in these matters than the hapless politicians trying to control them.
They're teens, not stupid. -
@PetraPanda Yes, I let down my guard and I made a little joke on Mastodon and am filled with regret.
-
@kissane Oh but my point is that the legislation doesn't even contemplate that. It just says Apple and Google can't distribute the app. There's no language about forcing ISPs to block the IP addresses or poisoning DNS.
Maybe some regulatory body will interpret that into the rules, but that doesn't seem in the cards right now.

@tyler Late reply but this is the geo-lock I was talking about, currently appearing in the browser. Most of tech journalists covering the bill couldn’t distinguish between hosting and connection providers but ByteDance had been saying for some time that they’d just cut the service in the US. It’s all pretty goofy.
