In case you're wondering how we get to someone at a candidate rally in the final weeks before a US presidential election, thinking that it's a good idea to say that all the garbage and trash floating in the Atlantic ocean has formed into an island and it's called Puerto Rico.
This is extremely racist. It's even more dangerous when coupled with very real policies designed to hurt Black and brown people. Stephen Miller spoke at this same event. This is not a joke. This is not funny.

Oh, one more point about Trump having empty rallies in the Midwest, but filling Madison Square Garden to the rafters. I've been trying to tell y'all how population works.
We like to think that Trump voters are in places like Kentucky and Alabama, and Harris voters are in New York and California. But that's just not true. The only state with more Trump voters than California, is Texas.
Most Trump voters live in California, Texas, New York, and Florida. Because that's where white people live.

@mekkaokereke Oh boy is CA full of literal Nazis who sell and trade Nazi stuff openly at flea markets. Also people love to forget that Oregon was founded as a racist white utopia.
Trump is doing so well because he is saying the quiet part out loud for so many Americans, not in spite of it.

@scott @mekkaokereke Yeah, we really live under this illusion about where different political coalitions reside. There’s this belief that the West coast is super progressive, and the South is super racist, but the truth is so much more complicated than that.
Heck, when I worked in SF, it was obvious that a lot of progressive rhetoric tech companies brought about DEI was really just a thin veneer to paint over their classist, sexist, and racist foundations. A lot of it felt deeply cynical, like HR and leadership were just putting on a performance.
