John Stoehr turns a cold eye on media malfeasance in letting Trump off the hook again and again and sanewashing his nonsense babble, since
"If he’s unfit to communicate, he’s unfit to serve."
And the media have an obligation to tell us this, not to function as "Trump’s assisted living program" and impose coherence, order, and meaning on meaningless spates of words.
John Stoehr
The press corps is Trump’s assisted living program
We are beyond “sane-washing.”

"Trump has become more incoherent as he has aged, but you wouldn’t know it from most of the press coverage, which treats his utterances as essentially logical policy statements — a 'sweeping vision,' even."

The power of a single word about media malfeasance
It's 'sanewashing' — and it's what journalists keep doing for Trump

"After the intense media focus on Joe Biden’s age and mental acuity, you would think Trump’s apparent decline would be a preoccupation. He is 78, after all, and often incoherent. But with rare exceptions, that hasn’t happened."

"The first thing to say about the hate and scorn currently directed at the mainstream US media is that they worked hard to earn it. They’ve done so by failing, repeatedly, determinedly, spectacularly to do their job, which is to maintain their independence, inform the electorate, and speak truth to power."
~ Rebecca Solnit
The mainstream press is failing America – and people are understandably upset | Rebecca Solnit
The media is still pursuing the appearance of fairness by treating true and false, normal and outrageous, as equally valid

"They pursue the appearance of fairness and balance by treating the true and the false, the normal and the outrageous, as equally valid and by normalizing Republicans, especially Donald Trump, whose gibberish gets translated into English and whose past crimes and present-day lies and threats get glossed over. They neglect, again and again, important stories with real consequences."

@wdlindsy
NopeI think most MSM preoccupation is to keep a 50-50 horse race, so we all keep reading/viewing.
That's why Trump gets sanewashed and Biden and Harris get such absurd coverage (eg. Biden is old. Harris is a tough boss)

@wdlindsy Finally followed your comments starting at one and moving on to 5. Usually I see 5 than go back to the one before it, reading is this was can be daunting. Guess I am a slow learner. Lol.

@wdlindsy I teach my students that there are indeed always two sides, but that those sides are rarely equal.

@wdlindsy If anybody tells me that Trump is getting a tough time in the media at least I can remind them about what happened with Joe Biden and then what happened after he stepped down. It is clear as day and is absolutely appalling, I wouldn't even entertain a discussion or a conversation about, it is a fact that cannot be argued & if somebody tries then I regard it as clear sign that the person I am speaking to isn't worth my time...

@EvelineSulman An excellent way to put the point, and thanks for teaching this.

"BEHOLD! Corporate news media continues to no longer care about age or dementia in their preferred candidate, Donold.
Remember how important age and mental capacity were for a month?? One bad debate performance from Biden and it’s all they could talk about!
Now that feels like a distant memory."

@wdlindsy one reason Trump has received a "get out of mental decline" card from the press is they always found him incoherent, but because a portion of the public gleaned meaning out as his sentence trailed off, there's an assumption on the behalf of the press that nothing has changed, that they still need to distill a few words out of his mumbling and assign meaning to it, just like his unhinged followers did

@wdlindsy It’s remarkable that (some of) the media outlets are *finally* admitting the obvious, but it’s pretty good timing

@wdlindsy starting to resemble the cult in midsommar, not far off from interpreting his crayon drawings as policy proposals.

@wdlindsy The press suddenly notices that Trump isn’t communicating very well. Very perceptive, guys!

It’s too bad that’s not what the media barons want. All they want is eyeballs so they can sell ads. They are in the outrage business not the “news” business.

@FerdiMagellan Yes, that sounds correct to me, for sure. And they want tax cuts for their owners and top managers.
