I've been looking at the Icom ic-7300 as a flexible HF radio that is sufficiently portable to carry around to activate away from home. I'd like to do HF data and voice. I like the idea of direct digital and the waterfall display, and good computer interfacing. Are there other entry-level HF radios in that price range that this brand new ham should consider? #AmateurRadio

@mcdanlj IC-7300 owner here. As an HF transceiver it's pretty fantastic, IMO, no regrets. Do note though that it's more "transportable" than "portable", so driving it to a ham fest or somesuch is fine, but if you're thinking of doing Parks on the Air or similar, it's a lot to lug around and power compared to a true portable like the IC-705 (which I also have and is great, for portable work)

@danderson Yeah, "transportable" fits within my definition. "Could reasonably be packaged to bring to an emcomm/auxcomm site" was the kind of thing I was thinking of. The 1C 20Ah 12V battery I bought would probably work fine for it.

@mcdanlj Yup, it's definitely transportable in that sense, easily so! Re: batteries, take care as to how many instantaneous amps they can provide too, at full transmit power it's quite a lot. But of course you can turn the transmit power down if needed, if you run 10W to match the IC-705 you get very extended runtime indeed.
