Because the Democratic Party tent is wide, there's, of course, a wealth of commentary this morning from all different angles about the opening night of the DNC. But one theme seems to tie much of the commentary together: as Brian Beutler notes, it's th...

/26Beware the Pundit-Brained Version of the Democratic Convention
As everyday Americans tune in to watch Kamala Harris receive her party’s nomination, they should trust what they see with their own eyes—especially as D.C.’s chattering class tries to gaslight them.

"Do not let these talking heads fool you into thinking that normal, commonsense people or ideas—like keeping kids out of poverty, safe from being shot in school, and free to read books of their choosing at their public libraries—are fringe. We can see with our eyes what’s happening before us, and we know the stakes of what lies ahead even if that understanding does not make us as savvy as them."

"Let them go to their parties, drink their cheap house wine on some grifting consultancy’s dime, and sneer amongst themselves behind our backs. I’ll be watching C-Span until they figure out their real responsibility or democracy completely collapses, whichever comes first."

And see — re: /26-8 on the media's treatment of the DNC — Scott Dworkin's valuable rundown of how the corporate media have from the outset done everything possible to throw cold water on Democrats' enthusiasm as the DNC unfolds. As he rightly says, "They just can't help themselves."

For Biden because of his strong upbringing these harsh events formed his character. It didn't destroy his character. There was a time even Republicans revered leaders of character.

@wdlindsy @lucybeahere
Agreed!
These are all very positive & powerful qualities that are seen repeatedly amongst Dems at rallies and meetings.
Its MASSIVELY heartening after a period of gloom. The Dems are clearly winning hearts and minds.Im still worried tho that so much power is in the hands of a few Rep decision makers for the Electoral College process. Including the ban on Sunday voting in some states. It has been deliberately manufactured by the MAGAs.
Now an article has come out about Bannon stirring up the terrorist violent neo-right
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/aug/20/neo-nazi-terrorist-group-steve-bannon-account
So the Dems need to be mindful of the dangers surrounding them every step of the way to the election. -

@Godfrey642 @lucybeahere I think we have to be resolutely realistic and not let ourselves forget the odds we face, the money and ruthless power behind Trump. But that realistic assessment of the situation should spur us to work, as Michelle Obama said so powerfully last evening.

@stargazersmith Yes, I agree. And I'm tempted to say there was a time when Republicans pretended to rever leaders of character.

@Americanist4u I agree. The speech showcased something that is a powerful, rich gift to American culture at large, the rhetoric of the Black church as they engage the public square on behalf of justice and compassion. We saw this on full display with Martin Luther King. It's on display with William J. Barber. And people like Raphael Warnock exemplify the best of this tradition, too — which is sadly overlooked when we decide to turn our eyes away from matters of racial justice and inclusion.

@LaNaehForaday I'm going to give Biden credit for following faithfully the best path of his religious tradition, something that, to my view, clearly grounds him and shapes his strong moral outlook. I understand that some people want to attack religion for a variety of reasons, and there are on full display applications of religion all around us that are toxic. But other applications are on display out there, too, as Raphael Warnock has just reminded us.

@LaNaehForaday I think the attacks by some Democrats and leftists on the authentic religious faith of folks like Biden and Warnock and many others are really sad, self-defeating, an attack on the solidarity progressive people sorely need to turn back the tide of fascism.

Churches being directly involved in politics make churches a joke. You cant fault people, specifically younger people, from seeing the joke that the church has become. If the church wanted to remain holier than thou, they should have remained holier than thou.
They did not.
Of course the few ruined it for the vast majority, but when you have LITERALLY, the biggest church of all time, the Catholics, coming out on a purely regular basis with how their priests are pedophiles and have been for centauries--------and they do NOTHING about it, fuck them.Churches and religion have a huge INTERANAL problem but they want to help you become more holy? As a child, you have a huge possibility of coming out of that arrangement raped.
Until churches fix their own internal SINS, they should not be attempting to help others become sin free.
Yes, some of this utter bullshit is good at keeping people in control in society by making them feel guilty for doing things that are bad.

@LaNaehForaday Neither Biden nor Warnock is directly involving churches in politics. Taht's what the Republicans want to do with their Christian nationalist agenda, and Biden and Warnock are opposing them — as, I'd note, people of faith motivated by a faith that runs directly counter to Christian nationalism. I think it's tragic and really dumb for some of us on the left to imagine we have the right to slander and slam and pick at these allies rather than welcoming them and their contributions.
