Because the Democratic Party tent is wide, there's, of course, a wealth of commentary this morning from all different angles about the opening night of the DNC. But one theme seems to tie much of the commentary together: as Brian Beutler notes, it's th...

Jonathan V. Last's fulsome praise of Joe Biden for all that he has accomplished on behalf of the nation is heart-warming. In Last's portrait of him, Biden's deep humanity shines through. A man who lost his wife and daughter in a car accident soon after he became senator, then saw another son die of cancer and a son descend into addiction, a man who has had a serious brain aneurysm: Biden has had his share of suffering.
The Old Man Who Saved American Democracy. Twice.
Age was Joe Biden’s secret weapon.

And rather than embitter him, that suffering — and the long life he's led — have resulted in wisdom and strength. He's not a perfect man — no political leader is perfect. But he has left an admirable legacy, with generosity at its core.
Last writes,
"The big question for me is: How was Biden able to make it?
I believe the answer is his age. Biden’s age was his electoral weakness. It was also his superpower."

"Aging isn’t for the faint of heart. It is a process of having things taken from you. Your status. Your health. Your freedom. Eventually, your life.
But in return, a well-organized mind accumulates wisdom. If we age correctly we develop perspective: About the full breadth of the human experience. About love and loss. About what is, and is not, important."

"I submit to you that it is precisely because Biden has lived a long, rich life that he was able to make those decisions which saved our democracy."
I'd add that Biden gives all indicators of being a genuinely religious man, unlike — God in heaven! — his bible-toting and bible-selling opponent. Religious in a non-showy but faithful way, while being excoriated by fellow Catholics who lean hard-right for being deficiently Catholic….
Faith grounds him, too.

"A vote is a kind of prayer for the world we desire for ourselves and for our children and our prayers are stronger when we pray together….
I saw [Trump] holding the bible and endorsing a bible as if it needed his endorsement. He should try reading it!
It says do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God. He should try reading it.”

"The first recurring theme was the contrast between Vice President Kamala Harris and ex-president Donald Trump. Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, who is known for her sharp takes on the Oversight Committee against the 'bleach blonde bad builts' of the GOP, laid it out plainly: 'Kamala Harris has a resume. Donald Trump has a rap sheet.'”

I explore three big themes coming out of the DNC.

"A second theme was evident in the choice of progressive firebrands like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and UAW president Shawn Fain, sharing the stage with institutionalists like Rep. Jamie Raskin and Hillary Rodham Clinton. These primetime slots highlighted the importance of coalition."
A broad tent. People united for a common purpose, to turn back fascism, a purpose that transcends our petty differences and squabbles. Solidarity.

"This is a turning point moment. We felt the strong moral underpinnings of this when Sen. Raphael Warnock took the stage and in his inimitable fashion called upon us to consider all children, not just within our own communities but throughout the world."

Being an example of what we like to perceive Christ was is not the same as being "Christian" even though "Christians" enjoy stating that because they claim to have been saved by this spiritual figure, that they indeed only have to embody the possible thought of what it must have been like to have actually been Christ in order to be saved by Christ. Reading passages in the Bible to illustrate how their own interpretation actually makes sense in the larger picture and scope of life today isn't enough to claim you have spiritually developed into a more religious enlightened being. In many cases going to church every single Sunday sometimes is not enough to enlighten you.
Good people that need to emulate another human as a path to salvation is as old as time itself. Religion- is pretending that you have accomplished this goal and now have the right to organize a meeting place for other people needing a short cut to gain cheap spirituality.
Biden is spiritually enlightened.

For me this was a high moment in the history of political speeches at US conventions.
I'd like to see the right try to match the work and achievements of the democrats over more than a half century in helping the poor, especially children. -

"Do not let these talking heads fool you into thinking that normal, commonsense people or ideas—like keeping kids out of poverty, safe from being shot in school, and free to read books of their choosing at their public libraries—are fringe. We can see with our eyes what’s happening before us, and we know the stakes of what lies ahead even if that understanding does not make us as savvy as them."

And see — re: /26-8 on the media's treatment of the DNC — Scott Dworkin's valuable rundown of how the corporate media have from the outset done everything possible to throw cold water on Democrats' enthusiasm as the DNC unfolds. As he rightly says, "They just can't help themselves."

For Biden because of his strong upbringing these harsh events formed his character. It didn't destroy his character. There was a time even Republicans revered leaders of character.

Agreed!
These are all very positive & powerful qualities that are seen repeatedly amongst Dems at rallies and meetings.
Its MASSIVELY heartening after a period of gloom. The Dems are clearly winning hearts and minds.Im still worried tho that so much power is in the hands of a few Rep decision makers for the Electoral College process. Including the ban on Sunday voting in some states. It has been deliberately manufactured by the MAGAs.
Now an article has come out about Bannon stirring up the terrorist violent neo-right
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/aug/20/neo-nazi-terrorist-group-steve-bannon-account
So the Dems need to be mindful of the dangers surrounding them every step of the way to the election.
