Because the Democratic Party tent is wide, there's, of course, a wealth of commentary this morning from all different angles about the opening night of the DNC. But one theme seems to tie much of the commentary together: as Brian Beutler notes, it's th...

This is so great!

Whoever designated the first Tuesday of November as voting day had voter suppression at the topmost of their minds.

@wdlindsy Ah, I see. It's about them and not the country.
Make this luxurious for us, or we spin things bad for you.

@wdlindsy I notice that when Semafor's article complains about the higher costs compared to the RNC convention, they fail to even consider that running an event in Chicago is much more expensive than running an event in Milwaukee.
Nothing against Milwaukee (it's my birthplace!), but Chicago venues can demand higher rates. -

"In voting for Vice President Harris, I assume that her public policy views are vastly different from my own, but I am indifferent in this election as to her policy views on any issues other than America’s Democracy, the Constitution, and the Rule of Law, as I believe all Americans should be.”

/17Conservative Republican endorses Harris, calls Trump a threat to democracy | CNN Politics
Retired federal appeals court Judge J. Michael Luttig, a prominent conservative legal scholar put on the bench by President George H.W. Bush, is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump, whose candidacy he describes as an existential threat to American democracy.

@Godfrey642 @wdlindsy
The fighting spirit is generating enthusiasm, which translates to massive fundraising hauls, more local offices, and volunteerism, which results in more people likely to vote. This was the biggest concern when Biden was the nominee. -

@fskornia Thank you for pointing that out. I think you're very right — apples and oranges comparing those two cities, when it comes to prices.

@mastodonmigration Yes, I loved that line, too. The visual image it evokes for me, with, I'll admit, not a little Schadenfreude, is entertaining.

@lin11c I'm with you. The corporate media have done everything short of stand on their head now for several decades to undermine the Democratic party politically and to slap the left wing of the Democratic party into its "place," while telling us incessantly that the only "real" Americans are white right-wing Republicans in the heartland. What's that all about, I wonder? I think it's all about the economic self-interest of the owners and top managers of the media.

Jonathan V. Last's fulsome praise of Joe Biden for all that he has accomplished on behalf of the nation is heart-warming. In Last's portrait of him, Biden's deep humanity shines through. A man who lost his wife and daughter in a car accident soon after he became senator, then saw another son die of cancer and a son descend into addiction, a man who has had a serious brain aneurysm: Biden has had his share of suffering.
The Old Man Who Saved American Democracy. Twice.
Age was Joe Biden’s secret weapon.

And rather than embitter him, that suffering — and the long life he's led — have resulted in wisdom and strength. He's not a perfect man — no political leader is perfect. But he has left an admirable legacy, with generosity at its core.
Last writes,
"The big question for me is: How was Biden able to make it?
I believe the answer is his age. Biden’s age was his electoral weakness. It was also his superpower."

"Aging isn’t for the faint of heart. It is a process of having things taken from you. Your status. Your health. Your freedom. Eventually, your life.
But in return, a well-organized mind accumulates wisdom. If we age correctly we develop perspective: About the full breadth of the human experience. About love and loss. About what is, and is not, important."

"I submit to you that it is precisely because Biden has lived a long, rich life that he was able to make those decisions which saved our democracy."
I'd add that Biden gives all indicators of being a genuinely religious man, unlike — God in heaven! — his bible-toting and bible-selling opponent. Religious in a non-showy but faithful way, while being excoriated by fellow Catholics who lean hard-right for being deficiently Catholic….
Faith grounds him, too.

"A vote is a kind of prayer for the world we desire for ourselves and for our children and our prayers are stronger when we pray together….
I saw [Trump] holding the bible and endorsing a bible as if it needed his endorsement. He should try reading it!
It says do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God. He should try reading it.”

"The first recurring theme was the contrast between Vice President Kamala Harris and ex-president Donald Trump. Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, who is known for her sharp takes on the Oversight Committee against the 'bleach blonde bad builts' of the GOP, laid it out plainly: 'Kamala Harris has a resume. Donald Trump has a rap sheet.'”

I explore three big themes coming out of the DNC.

"A second theme was evident in the choice of progressive firebrands like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and UAW president Shawn Fain, sharing the stage with institutionalists like Rep. Jamie Raskin and Hillary Rodham Clinton. These primetime slots highlighted the importance of coalition."
A broad tent. People united for a common purpose, to turn back fascism, a purpose that transcends our petty differences and squabbles. Solidarity.
