Reading up on the post-21st Amendment history of the Prohibition Party led me to the extremely weird story of Herbert Holdridge, the only serving U.S. Army general to take early retirement during World War II, and a man who was so desperate to get elected to something he spent the next 12 years lobbying for a spot on the ticket of basically any fringe party that would let him in the room, including the Prohibition Party and the American Vegetarian Party

Holdridge’s FBI file is available via the Internet Archive, and among the details found within is that at one point he came to the attention of an Assistant U.S. Attorney with the wonderfully 1950s name “Manley Bowler”

The L.A. Public Library has a photo of Manley Bowler with Carmine Stompanato, a barber whose gangster brother Johnny was killed in what became one of the most notorious homicide cases in the history of Los Angeles.

And if the name of Johnny Stompanato doesn’t ring any bells for you, here’s that background.

@jalefkowit pretty sure they don't want to allow anyone to take shots.

@dustin Honestly I'm not sure why the mob doesn't fund these guys via black money. Seems like a missed opportunity
