What is the significance of groups?

What is the significance of groups?
I feel it more like a classification, rather than a true sense of the group.
In my sense, the topics in the group is independent of the general topics.

Basic functionality:

• category permissions
• mentions (@group-name)

On this board the private groups are some sort of official classification (membership set by admins). The public groups also are some sort of classification but more off-topic, just for fun.

How groups are managed on another board is configurable and thus each admin can decide what he wants to have groups for.

Is it possible to assign someone to a group for certain period of time?

Users can be automatically added to a group but you have to remove them manually or they can use Leave Group button. Any additional functionality may be added by a custom made plug-in.

@frissdiegurke It would have been nice if there is an option for group discussion in groups.
