Hey @NewtonMark I’m trying to think of the name for a particular kind of indicator, that displayed speed or whatever on a sliding tape, that were really common in cars and planes of the mid 20thC.

@liamvhogan @NewtonMark like a slit in a dial indicator? Or like an old school radio dial?

@Taco_lad @NewtonMark imagine a rectangle, and as you increase in speed, a tape marked in numbers in the rectangle slides and you read from the line

@Taco_lad @NewtonMark so exactly the opposite of tuning an old radio, where the backing stays fixed and the needle moves back and forward. The ones I’m thinking of the backing moves and the needle is fixed.

@liamvhogan @Taco_lad @NewtonMark I can see it but I don’t know the damn name!
-
@caity @liamvhogan @Taco_lad You mean like the tapes down the sides of a PFD? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primary_flight_display
-
@NewtonMark @caity @Taco_lad yes! but the ones I’m thinking of are the mechanical version those are simulating
-
@liamvhogan @caity @Taco_lad Yes, there was a stage in PFD development where it was an electromechanical device. I didn't know those gauges had names, though; We've just called them "tapes".

@NewtonMark @caity @Taco_lad ok thank you. It goes without saying that internet search is now useless for this kind of query

@liamvhogan @NewtonMark speed tape

@liamvhogan @Taco_lad @NewtonMark I searched ‘linear speedo’ and found this https://www.aronline.co.uk/opinion/the-strip-speedo-years/
