Poll: Fediverse Server Funding
-
Fediverse servers cost money to operate, but there are a variety of ways to pay for it.
What type of funding method do you prefer for a fediverse server?
You can pick more than one. Please boost or repeat so we get a wide variety of answers. -
@scott other: paid accounts for businesses, e.g., https://community.hachyderm.io/docs/account-types/#specialized-accounts
-
It depends if you present the fediverse server as a forum community or a social media app. If you present it as a community with a specific theme, then it depends on which audience you are trying to attract.
-
@Tejan Ausland That's a good point.
For a pure fediverse server, I think most people shy away from anything that looks commercial or corporate. And the results of this poll, so far, seem to indicate that.
But if you create a community forum for a specific niche, it may be different, especially if they are new to the fediverse and this is their first account.
For example, if you are offering an online course on how to build a website and have an online support community that goes with it, people will sign up for the content and stay for the community. They will learn about the fediverse as they engage in the community and discover that people are not all on the same domain name. -
@scott Other. Cooperative.

@Ellipsis...
Other. Cooperative.
Cooperative is a good structure to use, but even a cooperative has to collect money somehow. Cooperatives would most likely have to pick from one of the methods in the poll to fund itself, unless they charge a membership fee. -
@scott yup. I pay an annual fee for CoSocial.ca but didn’t see an option in the poll that fit so chose “other”. Also I get the option to participate in an AGM and special meetings and even if I don’t participate I can get transcripts so I know how the coop is being run.

@Ellipsis... I should have included an option for membership fees (for all members). I am curious how many people are open to that.
