so a lot of people seem perfectly content to just swap out the billionaires and run on over to blue sky.

Bluesky is owned by VCs. The biggest investor in their last round of financing is named Blockchain Capital. It could be sold at any moment to anyone. It is not a safe haven.

@mastodonmigration @dannotdaniel ok but there are no billionaires involved as far as I know. Blockchain Capital is worth $54M and invested $15M in BlueSky.
I'm not saying it's a safe haven but it's a good place to go for people leaving Twitter.

It's a honey trap. Invest your time and energy building up a following there only to be sold to someone who wants to control your access to your audience before the next critical inflection point.
Honestly it is tactically stupid to go there. It is not a good place. There is no defensible position.

Sorry to be so abrupt, but if we want to stop losing, we need to be smarter, and that means countering this threat with social media that can not be so easily co-opted. It is not easy. The easy thing is to go to the next shinny corporate object. But, it's just a tar baby. Staying here, inviting others, building a better open social network. That is the only way to counter this threat.

I agree that nonprofit social media like Mastodon provides for a better model to get out from under the thumb of the oligarchs.I also have to admit that it made me glad to see Jack Dorsey quit BlueSky this week and beg for people to stay on Xitter.

@mastodonmigration @dannotdaniel there's no threat and it's not a competition. This place just isn't right for a lot of people. It's not black and white. Fedi > BlueSky > Threads > Twitter. There's a place for everybody. At least people are finally abandoning Twitter. We're not losing. This is a great place. People are thriving here.

Don't believe it. This is performative. The purpose of Bluesky is to pull in gullible liberals. Dorsey 'leaving' in a huff is just part of the show.
-
@mastodonmigration @dannotdaniel it's honestly weird to be so militant about it.

It is not a big happy world. We just got our clocks cleaned and the result is a dystopian future. A big part of that lose is an information war which projects right wing messaging while hiding progressive discourse. Here is what we are up against:
A new era dawns. Americaβs tech bros now strut their stuff in the corridors of power | Carole Cadwalladr
The era that began with the Great Disruptorβs first term is over. Beware the emerging elite

If liberal voices are herded into corporate silos this will only get worse.

Hmmm... guess you just have a different take on the urgency of the situation. Hope you are right.

"there's no threat?"
it's NOT run by volunteers. They are in it to make money. Money money money.
Was Twitter "no risk" as well? THAT was bought and weaponized, at the expense of it's own profits arguably.
it's centralized, for all intents and purposes.
99% of people are on that one server. So it is vulnerable. To scraping or scrapping, whichever. It's not just a clever name h/t @noondlyt

I don't see a conspiracy theory here.
the blue sky name is not the point, really - I think we agree on this

I do think Jack Dorsey's involvement is beyond problematic. Regardless of his little stage show.

@dannotdaniel @mastodonmigration @noondlyt it was Jay's idea. Jack made an initial investment but didn't like the direction they were going with it so he pulled out and focused on Nostr.

@jcrabapple @dannotdaniel @mastodonmigration More importantly, he went back to Twitter
