P.S. if you think your municipality or country actually manages to recycle most plastic.. look up the stats, especially after 2018

@skinnylatte I was surprised to learn that as much as 37% of plastic is recycled in the UK; I thought the figure was far lower (and a fair proportion gets processed here, some is made into new bottles and others into road surfacing).
We don't have this #1, #2. #3 stuff, the rules on what goes in the recycling container are far simpler...

@skinnylatte perhaps companies could be banned from selling plastic wrapped items into areas that can't recycle them?

@Workshopshed it’s not a geographical problem. It’s a global problem. This is the same globally. Anyone who claims they are recycling most of their plastic has fallen for a fossil fuel lie.

@vfrmedia a lot of it still gets shipped abroad to landfill, or incinerated locally, like every country

Sometimes when I post this, global north people blame *China*
‘If only they didn’t stop buying our shitty plastic in 2018, we can still feel better about perpetuating this lie that fossil fuel companies tell us about recycling’

@skinnylatte So, wait- the whole “most plastics don’t get recycled (& therefore recycling is a lie)” business is just that they can’t recycle the stuff the every recycling company tells you not to put in the recycle bin because they can’t recycle it?
I cannot be the only person in the country to actually read the “what does & doesn’t go in here” stickers on the sides of the recycling bins. -

@Gorfram that’s part of it. It’s also true that the entire workflow is broken, and the reason why people are so confused is this system was created to do just that, and to take away the ‘reduce’ part of it
The original story was just about local processes and confused people. This one is more extensive
The Myth of Plastic Recycling : Short Wave
For many, recycling feels like a tangible way to personally combat climate change and to positively affect the environment. But after a years long investigation, NPR correspondent Laura Sullivan finds that reality is generally the opposite: Only a small fraction of plastic is ultimately recycled. Moreover, plastic production is on the rise.Further reading:- Recycling plastic is practically impossible — and the problem is getting worse- How Big Oil Misled The Public Into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled

@skinnylatte I was so horrified when I learned years ago that our recycling centers just take everything to the landfill.
