If I ever become rich, I'm gonna start a factory to make laserdiscs. And also cd-roms. I want a 12"/30cm data disc, damn it.
(yes they'll also make floppies but I figured that was obvious)
-
@foone I still wonder if one of those combo DVD/laserdisk players would happily play a 12” dvd
-
@cinebox nah. They use different lasers.
-
@foone at least one model has both lasers on the same carriage mechanism. If the software doesn’t hardcode it to stop reading a DVD at the 5¼” mark it would just keep going
-
@cinebox could probably hack the firmware then.
-
@foone A way to make LDs again is the only thing I've ever wanted
-
@foone I want a hifi analog audio disc like the original laserdisc audio tracks but using Blu-ray lasers
-
@thomasjwebb yes!

@foone I daydreamed about this the other day:

I remember when it was common wisdom that of course vinyl is better than CD but a big part of why we thought that was CD hadn't yet reached its potential - the mastering was shit. Lately it seems to have inverted, for similar reasons - people are listening to vinyls of new music that wasn't mastered right for the format and playing with bad equipment. Anyway, analog can do better than vinyl and digital can do better than CD. A new optical analog format would be awesome. 1/4

@thomasjwebb ooh, a new fully analog format would be fun. You could stuff incredible resolution into an analog Blu-ray! And then make it the size of a laserdisc for even more resolution!
