The future desired by robocar people is that in a concert hall of 40,000 people, 40,000 private cars just slow-drive around the concert hall from the 7:30pm dropoff until the 11pm pickup time, blocking streets for a mile in every direction, so that they can be ready for their masters at a moment's notice. Think "world's biggest traffic jam, everywhere, all the time".

@peltast @scott Or, think of a fleet of cars that carry more than one person at a time, perhaps up to 10 that use algorithms to allocate resources to optimize the use of energy and vehicles. People are picked up and dropped off without having to own a car. We end up with fewer cars on the streets. Also, virtually no accidents because we don't have drunks and texting people driving them. We use them energy efficiently by ridesharing for pickups and drop-offs.
It could work, shall we try?
