"Donald Trump would have been convicted of crimes over his failed attempt to cling to power in 2020 if he hadn’t won the presidential election in November: that’s the finding of Jack Smith, the special counsel who investigated him.

"Smith was blunt in his assessment, though, telling Garland in the 146-page report that the Special Counsel’s Office believed — even in the wake of the immunity ruling — that the election-interference case against Trump would have succeeded had it been able to proceed."

/2Special counsel's report on the January 6 case is now public
“[B]ut for Mr. Trump's election and imminent return to the Presidency," the report concludes that a conviction in the Jan. 6 case against Trump was still possible.

“'[B]ut for Mr. Trump's election and imminent return to the Presidency, the Office assessed that the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial,' Smith wrote."

"The fact that we are already familiar with almost all of the facts in the first volume of Jack Smith's final report on January 6th and Donald Trump's attempted self-coup, makes them no less horrifying. ...It’s time to wake up and the Smith report is a loud alarm to help us do that."

The fact that we are already familiar with almost all of the facts in the first volume of Jack Smith's final report on January 6th and Donald Trump's attempted self-coup, makes them no less horrifying.

@wdlindsy November was the time to wake up. It's too late now.

"We will witness a president-elect—who tried to overturn the Constitution in his prior term—swear that he will 'preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States'—words that will metastasize into a lie the moment he utters them. He will desecrate the Bible on which he places his hand."

@zenkat Perhaps. For my part, I'm in favor of waking any time at all.

"The oath will be administered by a Chief Justice who granted the president-elect immunity from criminal liability, freeing Trump to ignore, attack, and undermine the Constitution."

"The brief proceeding [i.e., Trump's swearing in] will begin with sharp irony as Chief Justice Roberts, whose Supreme Court has given the president immunity to act as he pleases, reads the oath. It will end with the absurdity of Trump responding that he will in fact preserve, protect, and defend a document that he has openly ridiculed."

@wdlindsy
IF he truly won which I still doubt with EM in the picture and his very friendly ties to Russia as well as his singular technical possibilities... Mistrust towards certain people is clearly a rational option... -
@wdlindsy January 20th,2025 POTUS inauguration. Surreal swearing in a convicted felon who disregards the Constitution, and all laws, and tried a coup attempt 4 years ago.
Beyond politics, there is something very wrong, morally and ethically, here with US society.
-
@yuhasz01 "There is something very wrong, morally and ethically, here with US society": This seems absolutely correct.

@lotuslumineux I think we have strong reason to mistrust all of those hoping to profit — like vultures — off chaos, destruction, spreading of disinformation, attacking minorities.

@wdlindsy I live in Germany and was right now really shocked to see this election advertisement from the party whose leader worked at BlackRock - they really believe while surfing on the global fascist vague that they have already won over the whole world!!!
