Speaking of media abdication of responsibility (see /10-12), James Fallows points us to two front pages in New York Times on Oct. 29, 2016 and then today. Guess what the 2016 front page featured. And guess what today's front page does NOT feature.
Fallows writes,
"Why did the NYT play the first story the way it did? We don’t know. They won’t say."

‘See things steady and see them whole.’ That's what the press is supposed to do. That's not what we are getting.

@wdlindsy Isn't this not a rerun of the 1980 election on steroids. Carter should have served two terms and was taken out by a slick actor

"Why did it play the second story so differently? We don’t know. They won’t say.
'Don’t ask, don’t tell' is one thing. The attitude of our leading journalists boils down to: 'You can ask. We won’t tell.'
This is not good enough."
They won't say because they don't HAVE to say. Arrogance is their middle name.

@humanhorseshoes We definitely live downstream of that history, which has had radically deleterious effects on the nation for years.

@nanowiz Great hashtags. Yes, that gets it just right, both hashtags do.

@wdlindsy only caveat is We Do Know why the NYT does this. It's because "Hitler tamed by Prison" ....and they learned theirs
What is unknown is why so many presumably ethical journalists continue to wish to associate with them

I mean let them explode already? Can our culture PLEASE for the love of god stop giving in to white adult male toddlerism? It's boring by now. Just cut off their mikes and move on already.

@Greengordon Yes, a powerful statement by Mary Trump.

@wdlindsy and btw, holy---
"...the estranged wife of..."
as a truly *awful* description of Huma Abedin -
@rich I'm assuming that must be in the October 2016 front page. My aged eyes can't really make out much more than the headlines.

@darwinwoodka Can our culture PLEASE for the love of god stop giving in to white adult male toddlerism? A great question. And yet, that's all we seem to do over and over, with people like Trump, Vance, Musk, Thiel, Netanyahu — the list goes on and on.

@pixelpusher220 Yes, and I'd add that we need to ask about the political leanings of their owners and top managers, who ultimately call the shots at NYT.

@wdlindsy yes it's under the image:

The articles you post always have at least one good quote I like to pull out and give more exposure. I’m also hoping it motivates people to read the whole article or your other excerpts.

@Greengordon That's my goal in providing excerpts — to invite people to read the whole essay. It's often difficult to pick just the right thing to highlight, when so many essays are chock-full of goodies.

@rich I see. Thanks for blowing it up for me. I can now just about make out the line.
