"Vance is on the ticket of the only former president who, before our own eyes, tried to kneecap democracy to hold on to power.
That is disqualifying for anyone seeking to be first in the line of succession. Yet it seems that very important fact was lost amid the postdebate discourse that focused on the more polished nature of Vance’s answers over Walz’s."

/5Vance tried to sane-wash Trump’s autocracy. Walz didn’t let him. - The Boston Globe
Tim Walz cut through JD Vance’s attempt to smooth talk his way out of acknowledging the truth: He is the running mate of a man who tried to fraudulently, forcefully, and unconstitutionally stay in office against the will of voters, and who stands criminally indicted for doing so.

"Polls before the debate showed that Vance was the most unpopular vice-presidential candidate in American history, with only 30% of Americans viewing him favorably. After the debate, that number jumped 11% to 41%. That’s a problem."

@RonSupportsYou So say some people who evidently think lies are trifling — even as they post the Ten Commandments on schoolroom walls.
Which means some people are morally empty hypocrites who apparently don't know what the word "good" means.

Imagine a world in which the criteria for determining a debate winner is so f'ed up that the guy who's every response is nothing but lies delivered entirely w/o compunction is adjudicated the winner.
Oh, wait...
(BTW, if that's what you're seeking/want in a "winner", you're doing it wrong.)

@lupus_blackfur Yes, this is exactly what I've been thinking the past two days. We learn all over again that for many of us, morality has vanished to such a shocking extent that if someone "wins," it matters not at all what immoral methods he/she uses to "win."

A truly sad commentary on the population's/media's current perspectives.
Did not expect to witness this in my lifetime.
Hope to witness the pendulum swing back... But I'm not convinced one lifetime is long enough.

@lupus_blackfur I had really hoped we'd moved on, even if only a few baby steps. It appears I may have to spend the years left to me seeing us take large steps backwards, and that's so sad.

"Vance may have come across as disarming last night, but persuadable voters should listen to his messaging on the stump. …
Last night, Vance used grace as a Trojan horse for Trumpism, and Walz’s reciprocal friendliness and diplomacy unfortunately helped Vance squeeze through the gate and into America’s living rooms."

“Walz...knew JD Vance is an inveterate liar, a despicable racist, and a misogynist, so I found the concessions he made to his opponent shocking.... When you have a really decent guy like Walz say to a really bad guy like Vance things like: “I agree with you;” “I can meet you halfway;” “You have a point,” Vance, one of the most abnormal and dangerous politicians in America, not only gets normalizesd Vance, he actually comes to seem viable."

As Keith Owens says, the dilemma the media face with Trump and Vance is that those two threaten to explode if the media fact-check them — yet fact-checking is a basic responsibility of of any media worth their salt. Then he adds,

"The dilemma is for the rest of us, not those in the media who feel they have an obligation to enable Trump and Vance by caving and reporting every insane made-for-news insanity they manufacture for mass consumption while simultaneously not requiring any form of real accountability. The kind of accountability they required of President Joe Biden and are now demanding of Vice President Kamala Harris."

Speaking of media abdication of responsibility (see /10-12), James Fallows points us to two front pages in New York Times on Oct. 29, 2016 and then today. Guess what the 2016 front page featured. And guess what today's front page does NOT feature.
Fallows writes,
"Why did the NYT play the first story the way it did? We don’t know. They won’t say."

"Why did it play the second story so differently? We don’t know. They won’t say.
'Don’t ask, don’t tell' is one thing. The attitude of our leading journalists boils down to: 'You can ask. We won’t tell.'
This is not good enough."
They won't say because they don't HAVE to say. Arrogance is their middle name.
