Kinda weird and sus that some Mastodon instances aren't respecting deletes....
Had a post I deleted last week that just got replied to, from a mastodon instance.
And people wonder why casual users don't wanna be here...️

@BeAware Another proof that privacy in the Fediverse is just an illusion. Once a post is federated, consider it public forever.

@BeAware which instance? That sounds more like a bug than anything, you'd have to go out of your way to reject deletes right or just never receive the DELETE message?

I deleted the post that this is replying to.
You won't find it on my instance. Yet, there it is.
Not sure what it is, but it doesn't feel good.

@ThaMunsta @BeAware actually now that you mention it, I'm not sure how Mastodon decides where to send Deletes to
Like, does it maintain a list of all servers that requested your post? That feels excessive but also probably the only way to ensure that every server that has your data deletes it. Or does it just send it to all your followers and servers that boosted/liked it

@tom @ThaMunsta it should send delete requests to every instance that it was sent to. It should know that because my server has to actually send the post. Maybe I'm misunderstanding things but this seems like it should be an easy thing to do.

@RedTechEngineer @kevinrns @jasdemi 🤨if I ask a server to delete a post *I* made, it should honor that request.

@BeAware @RedTechEngineer @jasdemi
Yes that seems polite.

@kevinrns @RedTechEngineer @jasdemi seems like how the software should work. Politeness shouldn't be an option.
Denying the request should not be possible.

You can just change the software, lol.
I mean thousands of videos are saved from Youtube a day, that are deleted...
Privscy and deleting is an illusion on the internet as a whole tbh

Also, I think that it's very hard to track which posts are sent where, especially on fedi...

@fbievan @kevinrns @RedTechEngineer @jasdemi surely my instance should know that since it's the one sending it out each time, but I guess that's too much info to hang onto.️
It is what it is. Just another nail in the coffin for my hopes of this place getting much bigger than it currently is.

@BeAware @kevinrns @RedTechEngineer @jasdemi
not nesscerarily...
often the time you instance sends it to an instance which then sends it to another instance, which then fowards it to some random ass instance

@fbievan @kevinrns @RedTechEngineer @jasdemi all of the forwarding and boosting is directly done by my instance. That's why when a huge account boosts one of my posts, my instance crawls for about 30 seconds, sidekiq queue gets pretty hefty.

BeAware :fediverse:replied to BeAware :fediverse: last edited by
@fbievan @kevinrns @RedTechEngineer @jasdemi that's also why you cannot boost a post of mine and have it end up on an instance I've blocked on my end.

@BeAware @fbievan @RedTechEngineer @jasdemi
Your instance, since you deleted it, probably has no copy, and the copies you see elsewhere are stored elsewhere.
Continue to ask for politeness, but don't Barbara Streisand it.
