Meta Inc. engineer Zahan Malkani did a presentation on the back story of building Threads. There are some interesting bits of info in it like publicly stating that they "hope the ActivityPub stuff makes it" ... into the other code bases and applications at Meta.

That's a long laundry list. Milestone four was where we enabled interoperability with the fediverse, and was a final ship candidate. For anyone who knows the product, you might be laughing at the ambitiousness because we are far from full fediverse interop even today. In one of my weaker moments, I promised we could have this ready within the month. This was going to be the last thing we tackled in May. We took this very seriously.
I'm glad they're willing to acknowledge they over-promised on their Fediverse integration, still it feels like something that's very low on their list of priorities given that it's now been 1.5 years since then

@tom The people who were promising fediverse integration *did not know* how the fediverse worked at the time. Seeing the type of questions they were asking after they made the announcement showed that many of the engineers responsible had no idea what they were getting themselves into. A lot of hand waving away the issues of complexity that will actually come up trying to smash an open network onto a completely centralized monolith. Especially cause Threads is literally a fork of Instagram

@tom to be fair most of the fediverse has no idea what the fediverse is either lol
