Tapping the sign again:
Being autistic does not make anyone sexist, racist, eugenicist, an advocate for gendered violence, an apologist for child abuse, or any of the things that white dudes in open source technology are starting to be held accountable for.
Being an *asshole* makes someone an advocate for abuse.
Stop infantilizing grown-ass adults.
Criticism of a sexual harasser is not ableist. You know what's ableist? Your colleagues who refuse to prioritize accessibility in FLOSS.
-
It's especially wild to accuse someone of ableism for wanting a creepy asshole out of a community when autistic people who aren't cis white dudes are disproportionately abused.
When you prioritize the abuser, you are not doing human rights work.
A person like Stallman drives out autistic people, too, you muppets.

@akareilly
Every time I hear people going on about "but RMS has done so much!" I retort - the sexism and harassment of the GNU and Linux community were a major component in driving women away from FOSS for decades. Where would our community and industry have been if the founders were intentionally inclusive of HALF THE POPULATION!!! -

Hear, hear.
Stallman is presently the biggest example with the latest report, but have you fucking seen Linus Torvalds? Have you seen the assholes in the FOSS community who creep and grope and steal and make sure that women are chased completely out of what they have decided is Their Space?
Stallman's not being targeted for being neurodivergent, he's pinned the target to his own face by being a creeper, and he's far from the only one. The FOSS community has never been welcoming to women, except those who simper and lick the feet of the Big Names, and fuck that noise.
-
@akareilly I am 100% behind this as long as Hanlon's Razor is properly observed when assessing ones actions for intent. Don't forget that when dealing with neurodivergent people, atypical behaviors are not necessarily a mark of poor character or bad intent. Furthermore, people can and do change or improve themselves, and even the best people sometimes do or say stupid things without thinking them through. Please carefully consider the impact your words have on people's lives.

@earthshine @akareilly In Stallmans case people did for many years try to explain to him why his actions were harming others.
He refused to listen for years.

To illustrate this point: two women, Alyssa Rosenzweig and Asahi Lina, are the main reason you can run Linux on an ARM Mac right now, complete with GPU acceleration.

@akareilly
FLOSS has the property that anyone who wishes to attempt a feature may do so, but the corollary is that if it neither thrills anyone nor is encouraged by eg patronage, then the feature will await one of those states.The documentation tends to lag, I've not done much of improving that, either.
As the general standards and behaviours around accessible design grow more uniform, FLOSS interface programming will absorb them, but it is not in the nature of the beast to lead.

I am going to help you do better.
Would you have written your reply in this way if you knew that I am one of the people most acquainted with how FLOSS projects get supported?Would you have written your reply in this way knowing I have had discussions with FLOSS developers about accessibility that lead me to frame this as a social problem requiring a change in who gets to feel safe in open source projects?
FLOSS is not a natural force. We choose communities that shape it.
