Heather Cox Richardson puts her finger on a major theme running through commentary on the DNC this morning:

@wdlindsy The vile right is attacking Gus for showing emotions, trying to compare him to what a real son should be -- the emotionless Barron Trump (BTW, aren't these the same people who said leave the children out of the attacks whenever someone would mention Barron?)

@K8KET Well-stated and well-noted. That other family is just horrifying β as recent tell-all books by several of its members show us.

@Greengordon No need to appeal to me to hear you out! I very much agree with your perspective here.

@DoesntExist It's sadly predictable, isn't it? Josh Hawley β of all folks! β pontificating on masculinity. And, as you say, Mike Crispi. SMH.
-
@Originallyrose Indeed. Well-stated.

@amazing_ces What lives beneath the barrel is a good formulation, for sure. My parents, too, would have shaken me till my teeth rattled if I'd mouthed off in this vile way.

@MaryAustinBooks You're exactly right. In this thread, you'll see an excerpt from an article by Evan Hurst making that same point.

@jgordon @msbellows I'm not ever really in the business of predicting the future. I wait and I see β and do all I can to avoid self-defeating cynicism and sustain hope.

@PattyHanson You're exactly right. And adolescents, in particular, are just not given to displays of sham emotion when it comes to their parents.

@nutmeg I think of many media types as having vastly overinflated egos, which shelter them from recognizing how others see them. For many of them, arrogance seems to be their middle name.

@MaryAustinBooks Me, too β sharp tongue, humane perspective, progressive commitments.

Just went and read the full article. On point as always. -

@crdfilm Yes, there's a deeply twisted gender thing going on with these comments, the claim that they and they alone corner the market on masculinity, which is impassive, dominating, non-expressive and non-emotional. Sad, pathetic notion of masculinity.

@LALegault @MintSpies I'm not seeing the misogyny. Granted, I'm a male and surely miss a lot that's readily apparent to women. But I've never seen Keith Owens saying anything at all that seems to me remotely misogynistic. I would think that his brilliant wife Pamela Hilliard Owens wouldn't put up with misogyny in her equally brilliant husband. I think a real gift of the African-American community is its strong sense of solidarity β Black men sticking up for Black women and vice versa.
