Heather Cox Richardson puts her finger on a major theme running through commentary on the DNC this morning:

She writes,
"The contrast between Gus Walz’s sincere emotion and the derision it provoked from the right offers a troubling glimpse into the state of political discourse and the depths to which partisan attacks have sunk. This not only highlights the lack of basic human decency in certain right-wing corners of our politics but also raises important questions about how conservatives view emotional expression, particularly from young men, in the public sphere."

I'd say this behavior doesn't so much give us a troubling glimpse into the state of political discourse, as into the who these folks are: they're truly bottom-of-the-barrel human beings.
And if we let them game the political system and impose their cruel minoritarian views on the rest of us, then God help us — and shame on us.

"I get that Obama is the former president, whereas Michelle is merely (?) the wife of that former president. She didn’t hold any office; she was just (??) the wife. But for those taking notes (and you really should be taking notes), this is a real-time paradigm shift we are witnessing.
It is the women, Black women in particular, who are now taking center stage."

"Tonight, when Kamala Harris steps to the podium, she will formally launch a new era when women are no longer just the rescue team/cleanup crew, nor will they remain content in roles as the supporting or opening act.
Women, especially Black women, are now the main event. … Truth be told, Black women have been the main event in the Democratic Party for quite some time. But now, that fact is being shoved front and center…."

"To no one’s surprise, many on the right, who have lost the ability to recognize or feel this kind of love and devotion, took immediately to mocking this family, and Gus Walz in particular. …
The Blaze, a conservative rag, apparently deleted its tweet, as did Crispi and Coulter, after receiving widespread criticism and seeing the hate pile up in the comments. But they showed us who they are."

@wdlindsy too weird to love anyone or anything except possibly money and power, the right can only ridicule.
It's outrageous, but it's appropriate to feel sorry for them. Somehow, they all are traumatized and pitiful.

@wdlindsy If my parents were alive and heard me even think the bile these cretin’s are spewing, I’d be grounded for life. My Mom would have made me write an essay of at least 1000 words why my behavior was so abominable (with perfect grammar, punctuation and spelling - w/o the aid of a computer), followed by a formal apology and then probably volunteer work with those less fortunate then myself. These people aren’t the bottom of the barrel. They are what lives beneath the barrel.

"Her surge is at least partly due to the pent-up desire of many young voters, people of color, and progressives for a champion who will push a new set of values. I would vote for a ham sandwich over Trump, but many voters are desperate to win something larger—for all of us. If Harris and Walz prevail, we will."

@wdlindsy How pitiful, how very small and lacking these people are who get a thrill out of picking on children - for their vulnerabilities, no less.

"Tim Walz, the former high school coach and teacher from Minnesota, just simply brought the house down.
And when he was done, his boy Gus ran up on that stage and gave him the biggest hug ever.
Stay mad about it, Republicans."

Probably Weird For Republicans To See Kids Who Are That Proud Of Their Dad

Or, hear me out now, the mainstream media is very fascist-friendly. Maureen Dowd of the NYT is not stupid - she knows what she’s doing. Same with the other reporters and editors there and at the WaPo.
"Addicted to horse-race election coverage, the political press just can’t stop looking for ways to give Trump every single benefit of the doubt, all in an effort to create some supposed level playing field.”

Not to make too fine a point of it, the contrast between the Walz family, who actually love each other, and that other family (who shall remain nameless), is very refreshing to see.The party of 'family values' doesn't seem to care though, and has actually been ridiculing healthy displays of affection between candidates and their families.
SMH...those people have no moral compass. Completely lost. Irredeemable.

This is so true and it disappoints me so much that people I once respected and thought had principles…well, they would have been 'Good Germans’ at best, I now know. Maybe a lot worse.
"you know this true, you know I’m telling you the truth—that values and character matter most of all. In leadership and in life … Decency and respect are on the ballot.”

@LALegault @MintSpies I don't know what you're calling a backhanded compliment. I hear a thoughtful Black man celebrating the stellar contributions of Black women. Misogyny? No, that's not what I hear at all.

@Greengordon This has been a time of real unmasking for a lot of us, I think. We've been forced to see what is under the mask of people we thought we had known — family, friends, neighbors — and the reality is sometimes shocking.
