Heather Cox Richardson puts her finger on a major theme running through commentary on the DNC this morning:

@nutmeg They are almost all very thoroughly embarrassing themselves right now. I will never unsee the way they descended on Biden, an aging man trying to remain in good health, and surrounded him like sharks sensing blood in the water — something they have never done to Trump. I ask myself who raised people who can behave this way? And whether they, most of whom are on the younger side, ever reflect on the fact that they, too, may one day be old and would not want that treatment?

This has been one of the best things about the campaign from day 1, that support has been grassroots driven.
And nicely ironic that it is mainstream media who are making themselves redundant and obsolete.
The birth of the internet radically transformed traditional news media from being an industry where people actually researched and printed news, into little more than an opinion amplifier and echo-chamber where facts went out the window. And news is being democratized.

@wdlindsy oh gee, I’m scared now. No wait, he’s scared now. Like there’s any other way Trump knows how to be.

All that, and furthermore, how differently they treat The Orange Fascist's health. Whether his severe narcissism or his declining cognitive abilities, there's next to no serious article or segment, let alone every day and from multiple outlets.

For understandable reasons — you cannot fake this kind of adolescent emotional response to a parent who is loved and admired — this moment of Tim Walz's son Gus Walz saying "That's my dad!" as he points with pride to his father on stage at the DNC has taken social media by storm today.

@jgordon @msbellows I wonder if we're now seeing that it hasn't worked well at all, though.

@nutmeg Yes, absolutely. They're so shameless and oblivious to how they're showing themselves to the rest of us, and what the consequences will be as we shake our heads and refuse to listen to them ever again.

@annietime Yes, it's his default setting, isn't it? And he's gotten away with it for so long that he imagines he can keep doing it to the bitter end, damn the consequences.

@sufferforme I agree. We're not seeing a media-massaged campaign. If anything, they've avoided the mass media in favor of grassroots organization and adroit use of social media.

Honestly, I'm not sure how many are oblivious. I'd rather most are well aware and act as they do regardless.

@wdlindsy You cannot fake genuine pride and love. Gus's reaction to his dad was the sort of reaction all parents hope to get from their kids.

@wdlindsy Michelle Obama is so astonishingly beautiful to the tippy tips of her fingers. We are lucky she married Barack, or she would not have been dragged into our view and our lives and our political landscape. No how no way, without his public ambitions. Thank you, Barack Obama, for bringing us Michelle Robinson.

@wdlindsy @nutmeg William, your reply made me recall this story, “The Divided Blanket,” which I copied when I was 14 from my grandmother’s collection of her favorite poems, quotes, & short stories. (Her version identified its origin as Russian, but I’ve seen more modern versions identified as French). I can’t find it online, so typed it up as an email and took this screenshot…

@wdlindsy It is amazing how many voters just mechanically vote along party lines without a thought as to who or what they are voting for. If the candidates’ policies were listed instead of the names and party affiliations, these voters would be lost.

I don't want to publicize these cruel low-life human beings. But, at the same time, we need to know they're out there, and we need to expose the cynical hollowness of their claims that they stand for "God" and "family values" and "morality."
As Parker Molloy says, Trump supporters are now openly mocking Tim Walz's neurodivergent son Gus Walz and his touching display of pride and love at last night's DNC.

She writes,
"The contrast between Gus Walz’s sincere emotion and the derision it provoked from the right offers a troubling glimpse into the state of political discourse and the depths to which partisan attacks have sunk. This not only highlights the lack of basic human decency in certain right-wing corners of our politics but also raises important questions about how conservatives view emotional expression, particularly from young men, in the public sphere."
