#BCPoli I had a conversation with a former #BCUnited candidate last night. I wanted to hear about his experience with the sudden departure of his party from the #BCElxn2024.
I have spoken to him before, he knows I am not a BCU or BCC supporter. I came away feeling nothing but sympathy and outrage for the position he has been put in. He seemed devastated. Angry. Sad.
He has door-knocked for months. He has spent thousands of dollars. He has worked incredibly hard. And now, he is out. Left only to consider whether to run as Independent.
What an incredibly shitty situation. Regardless of the policies, this is not how politics should ever work. What Kevin Falcon did should be illegal. I hope he faces a lawsuit. I hope the BCU party is prosecuted for effectively stealing all the money that was raised on its behalf by people like this candidate.
It's not just a “OH BC Politics is always so crazy" moment. It's a real injustice and disservice to democracy itself in our province.
Kevin Falcon, John Rustad and everyone involved in this boondoggle should be ashamed. It should be *they* who are left to literally wander the streets for nothing.

I am also curious as to how everyone just assumes the head of the party can do this.
No CEO has this kind of authority. Even Elon Musk cannot make broad decisions on his own in Tesla, X.
This feels more like a media campaign to scuttle the party than a legal one. Maybe they just offered Falcon a pile of money to say it, even though he could not legally do so.
"Bad code smell."

@Amgine the persona I talked to asked the same questions. It's baffling that it's not illegal.

@chris Parties are Members-only clubs, as someone somewhere recently pointed out. It looks there's not much that has to happen to deregister a party.

@chris "Under the Election Act, an organization includes both incorporated and unincorporated organizations. Although some political parties choose to register as societies under the Society Act, it is not necessary to do this to register as a political party under the Election Act."
I don't know the party was set up but presumably those involved can take some civil action, if it's even possible to do so.

@edwiebe Did they actually deregister as a party? I wish I could get a look at their constitution!
