Beginning to believe that @Gargron doesn't want me contributing to #mastodon — he's now partially recreated three of my pull requests that I've worked on.

@thisismissem @MastodonEngineering this edit reads like @Gargron coerced you to retract your words somehow, which would be not surprising at all.
-
@thisismissem @MastodonEngineering Are you sure that you are alright? You seemed really upset in the original post and supported it with a lot of evidence. This sudden edit and turn-around is really worrying and just makes the Mastodon team look worse. You could have left the original post and made a comment to it to show how there was an issue at first but it got resolved. Now it just looks like you were forced to change the post.

@thisismissem @MastodonEngineering
As a somewhat baby developer myself, I found it hard to figure out how to get involved with the development process.
When making a PR to Mastodon a while back, I was really keen to have an IRC / Slack / @matrix channel that I could join to ask questions about the development plan before diving into writing code.
You think something like that would help?
I did get a response to my PR eventually but by that time the code needed to be updated, to work with the latest main branch, and I no longer had time to update it myself.
-
@Kiloku Nope, this is entirely me reflecting on the situation and wanting to shift to a more positive energy.
I can say something in anger, then take time to reflect, before then revising my statement to reflect how I like to work. Public call outs usually aren't my style if I can avoid them.
I was incredibly tired yesterday that contributed to my very emotional response, and had other contributing factors.
-
@justsoup @MastodonEngineering I wanted to edit the original post, since that's what had gone viral, and I think it's important for everyone who boosted it to see that I've reflected and adjusted my position.
This was a decision I made myself, and then told the Mastodon team about it.
-
@benx @MastodonEngineering @matrix that'd be the discord, that's where conversations can take place.
Yes, you do need to be a supporter of the project to be in the space, but it's $12 a year to participate there.
-
@thisismissem @MastodonEngineering
Ah, good to know something like that exists, for future notice. -
@thisismissem @MastodonEngineering The decision to edit the whole post still rubs me wrong, but I am glad that it was your decision. Hopefully this whole thing gets figured out and you can get back to doing your amazing work!
-
@justsoup @MastodonEngineering it was really down to a new post wouldn't be seen by all the people the previous post had. By edited, everyone received a notification that I'd edited something that they'd boosted.
I do also have a separate post up: https://hachyderm.io/@thisismissem/113472150241957758
-
@justsoup @MastodonEngineering and the original post is not gone, everyone can still see it in the edit history.
-
@thisismissem @MastodonEngineering
Are any of the main devs active on the discord though? And/or is there a community manager keeping tabs on it and liasing with the main devs? -
@benx @MastodonEngineering all of them are on discord, and there's also @andypiper who does a bunch of community work.
-
@thisismissem
appreciate u very much in this space, and your efforts are v much noticed and welcomed at least by me, who is the only person I can speak for -
@jonny thanks, and also glad to have you in the space & contributing too!

@thisismissem @MastodonEngineering i do not want to comment on the specifics of this particular case for the lack of competence and project insights on my end, but i would like to add some thoughts: a) i feel you, having been there as well, it felt awful. but b) even if your code did not get merged, you might still have made a meaningful contribution and c) i do not know which implementation will be better in the long run, but it is sometimes hard to understand … 🧵

@thisismissem @MastodonEngineering … all the subtleties of an implementsion and d) there is also the tradeoff for maintainers between time for review iterations vs reworking a suggestion.
that said, thank you for your work and, again, i feel you, i do not want to say you are wrong in any way.

@slink @MastodonEngineering at minimum we can do more to communicate "hey, I opened what I think is a simpler/better/whatever approach <here>"
Then we're not seeing a PR that does work that we've already attempted without any communication or information
