It's happening again, currently, in real time, for the fediverse. Except this time it's Evan Prodromou

@adrienne got hostile in Mike Masnick's replies, called him a liar who makes bad choices over his involvement with bluesky.

@jenniferplusplus Saw that whole exchange.
When FOSS moves from an ideal to a religion, people really need to step back a bit.
At the end of the day, it’s still just software.

@jenniferplusplus I sometimes wonder if people will ever learn that you can't make progress by alienating people who disagree with 10% of your position, but agree with you on 90% of things.
I don't know the specifics here, but I've seen this over and over and over again with FOSS and politics: the time to squabble over the details is when you've actually "won" and the details are what's left. And you can do that better as friends. Division just helps the other team.
Sigh.

@RenewedRebecca particularly when that religion finds it has a self appointed high priest.

@jzb It makes more sense if you assume that the outcome he continually pursues is the one he desires and intends to achieve. However you're defining progress is clearly not something that Evan wants. To judge by his repeated actions, what he does want is to be the king of this little hill. So he pushes everyone else off of it who isn't adequately deferential to him, or who wants to grow the hill, or who wants to connect with other hills.
