Discussion of the overt fascism now promoted openly by one of the two major parties in the US continues — because of course.

@wdlindsy Yes, Putin and US Christians share common values—chief among them, hatred of LGBTQ. That alone is a strong motivator for the US RW to vote for trump and to herald trump’s support of Putin. Another common interest of many US evangelicals and Putin—the subjection of women to 2nd class citizens.

@wdlindsy Those with all the money aren't on the same team in the fallout as their "useful idiots." They know the price of labor would skyrocket, they recognize that most people won't be able to afford basics. They know that will plunge many of their average voters down into the depths of working poverty, whence they'll be willing to take the roles formerly occupied by the immigrants they ousted. But the money, power, prestige will have concentrated to fewer hands: the real goal.

It is astonishing how much some people hate those they depend on to make the world they enjoy possible.

"The armed North Carolina man arrested Saturday for allegedly threatening FEMA workers says he was motivated to intervene in person by that blitz of bogus social media posts about Hurricane Helene aid being withheld – and semi-admits to being bamboozled: 'I went up and saw that there was absolutely nothing there, so I stayed, and I volunteered all day.'”

@bici I definitely always aim at that. I admire my husband for his ability to "see" people others might overlook, to take notice of them and talk to them. I have learned a lot from his good example over many years.

@hamishb Well-stated. Astonishing, for sure. I've come over the years to see racism and its ilk — e.g., xenophobia — as something like a drug that powerfully stupefies people. It allures, entices, provides a thrill, and at the same time, it dumbs people down so they can't see that they are harming themselves as they direct hate at others.

Trump's proposed immigrant round-ups talk about detention centers first.
The detention centers are to be slave labor camps with detainees
Similar to how China's Uigher slave labor camps function. Or Hitler's
The proposal is to make immigrants work unpaid before eventually being deported
Trump has a long history of not paying his workers. The rich want the same
The GOP's private prison donors seek to exploit the labor of detainees.

@cwicseolfor Yes, that seems right to me. Those with lots of resources think that if they side with less well-heeled bigots in their crusade to attack immigrants, "their own" immigrants will be safe, because their money will protect them. This is parallel to the abortion issue, where wealthy people colluding with culture warriors to rip abortion rights from others assume that they and their kind will not have to worry, since they can always affrord an abortion.

@Npars01 Thank you for pointing that out. Yes, I think this is exactly how the camps they're envisaging are being thought of. At the same time, I think it's important to note that the many Americans who are hungering for this to happen do not seem to understand that rounding up and interning millions of people as a prelude to deportation will harm themselves in ways they don't seem to foresee.

China never foresaw the consequences of their slave labor camps either.
Multinationals moving out. Sanctions. Reputational damage. Imports stop. The spread of slavery. International fraud.

@Npars01 Yes — and I think it's people in general and not only national leaders or those crafting these plans that need to be challenged to educate themselves about what happens to them, to everyone, when they choose to vent hate in this way.

The South never acknowledged the harms of slavery either. Modern Republicanism is based on that delusional denial.
Harriet Beecher Stowe was reviled in the South for rubbing their nose in it.

@wdlindsy we just got our roof replaced. We wondered the same thing. I speak some Spanish and was able to talk to the workers. All very nice and polite; patient as I struggled to use my Spanish. They arrived before dawn at 6:30 AM and left way after the sun went down, taking only a break for lunch. Tell me what MAGA would do that?

Honestly with the way that this shit is going I'm starting to think that the government should offer police wellness checks every hour during and maybe until handover for all election workers.
Would be tax dollars put to good use. Wasteful considering it shouldn't be needed, but yeah.
Don't these dumbasses know that the election people count *their* votes too? and that generally most places ensure they have a fair mix of all parties that are representing in their county?
