"What’s been really striking this year is that while traditionally deep distrust of the mainstream press has long been the province of right-wing Republicans, now it’s liberals who once cheered for the media to do better who seem to be giving up on them."

And why would those of us resolutely opposed to a return of Trump to the White House and the triump of fascism NOT give up on the corporate media, I ask myself?

"What I saw at the 2024 DNC inflamed my hatred of the ‘media elite.' Our industry is once again doing everything it can to fail to meet the enormity of this moment."

"Much of what I witnessed and heard about during my time in Chicago reinforced my preexisting beliefs that far too many so-called elite members of my profession — national political media scribes who fancy themselves as speaking truth to power, but more often just speak words to financially destructive Google algorithms — are mollycoddled hogs who are doing everything they can to fail to meet the enormity of this moment."

"So much of doing this job, journalism, the right way hinges only on having some sense of moral clarity and not being an asshole to people who clearly don’t deserve it. It is a wonder of the modern world how many in the pampered ranks of this profession can only find it within themselves to publicly flunk this 101-level test, again and again."

Michele Hornish provides a rundown of what's happening after Harris became the Democratic candidate: a huge surge in voter registration, especially among younger Black and Hispanic women, and unprecedented numbers of volunteers to work with the campaign. Then she writes,

"Let’s not forget all of the Sky Is Falling coverage before the Harris campaign launched that bemoaned the Democrats’ lack of enthusiasm and energy. Every article reminded us that this enthusiasm gap was a sure sign that Democrats would lose in November.
Now Democrats have a 14 point enthusiasm advantage. We’re filling stadiums and zoom rooms and phone banks.
But do go on about how Joy is Not a Strategy."
She's speaking to New York Times with the last remark.

And to be specific, I distrust management in journalism. The people doing the actual job are usually doing good work.

"Pollster Tom Bonier noted what he called 'the Harris Effect': the 13 states that have updated their voters files since July 21—when Biden said he would not accept the Democratic nomination for president—have seen ''incredible surges in voter registration relative to the same time period in 2020, driven by women, voters of color, and young voters.'"

Done, and done. Last to go for me were The Guardian (US), and AP. stopped reading earlier this year when they jumped on the “Biden must go” bandwagon. Very disappointing.

@CptSuperlative But read Asawin Suebsang's commentary in this thread. He's talking about the people actually doing the job. I won't ever unsee the hordes of young reporters circling Biden like wolves, screaming questions about him re: age and mental acuity — when they've never treated Trump the same. I see a lot of arrogance and lack of moral seriousness and moral centeredness in a bunch of journalists.

Unfortunately, the people doing the work take their cues from management. It really is like any other profession. If the boss makes it clear what gets you promoted and what gets you fired, that's what most do. Ask Brian Stelter.

@wdlindsy entitlement? Pretty large leap. Being male - not the toxic variety just normal average male- is actually under attack daily and women are really oblivious to this. They seem to have the same attitude men used to have about women. Meaning why can’t they just act like men? Except reversed.

@MarkRNay "Being male - not the toxic variety just normal average male- is actually under attack daily."
Really?
Do tell.
When I look at who still runs most corporations, who has most wealth invested in himself, who keeps women in subjugated positions in society after society, I don't see people under attack.
I see very, very entitled people.

@mastodonmigration @CptSuperlative Yes, that's how it appears to me. And not only do they take their cues from management, but they're hired and fired by management, who set the criteria for hiring and firing.
