I'm really sad about this #NaNoWriMo thing. I've used them as an example of a tool that does just enough, and doesn't need to constantly "innovate" new features while also building real community (unlike most social media). But I just deleted my account, so if I'm writing this year, it won't be using the NaNoWriMo tools or forums or what not.
Maybe it's time to build a real community centered NaNoWriMo for the fediverse that doesn't need a centralized non-profit bureaucracy behind it?

Yep, just started this project today in my own pool of frustration, triggered by the official statement on AI describing people with opinions like mine as "classist and ableist" (neither of which, I believe, are remotely accurate descriptions of me).
Gonna do what I can to pull something together in time, and then iterate and improve for next year.

You need a Kofi or other place people can donate - I suspect you're going to need it.
You also deserve it for stepping up.

It's possible. Mastodon for short stuff, lemmy for middle length. Just takes getting people in communication and on the same page (pun intended).
Which isn't as easy as it is simple, but the mastodon hashtag system works well enough to be a kind of decentralized center. Just pick one, get talking about it,and see how it goes

@adaddinsane @amin @wendypalmer Indeed; thank you! And thanks for pointing it out Wendy! Looking forward to taking a look.

@Maelguerra General social media is good too, but it was already in use on the side. What I'm really going to miss are their simple tools for keeping track of novel length, and their hyper-local chat rooms and events. I'm kind of thinking of building something specific would be good for that.
