@quillmatiq Some things to consider:
Bluesky received millions in VC funding. It's not insurmountable, but they're going to want to make that back. Bluesky is a public benefit LLC, so they're supposed to be sustainable and responsible, but still for profit.
Threads is owned by trillion-dollar Meta.
Mastodon gGmbH is a non-profit from Germany.
These organizations stand between you and the people you want to connect with, so their relative power dynamics may be worthy of your consideration.

@kai I'm not here to force folks to use a specific service if one serves their needs. If my friend finds comfort in a specific platform, my aim is to keep up and communicate with them, not force them into a place they feel uncomfortable.
There are many pros and cons to these platforms, and I can find faults with their alternatives, too. The only thing a social media platform is sure to do is eventually disappoint you. At some point in the future, I'll likely self-host.

@art The art of good conversation, albeit abridged to some extent, seems to have become eclipsed by CDN fuelled Social Networks where owning a Louis Vuitton hand bag somehow makes someone an “influencer” or what used to be called a “trend-setter”. I’ve always gravitated to IRC, XMPP & similar, the BBS revival & the original “Galaxy” social space on what was then Tor Hidden Services, back in 2013-14. Today people seem to form closed groups for more meaningful conversation. Times change.

It's disappointing that threads is choosing to make joining the wider Fediverse "opt-in" while sharing their personal online status "opt-out".

but what do we want out of these services? that's the conversation we don't seem to want to have.
I want a universal public forum unbiased by those with more money. everybody an equal player in deciding what info, ideas and art goes viral. I think that can very positive effects on the larger society.
the mastodon model is most in line with that afaict.

@wjmaggos I don't want a universal public forum - one platform cannot and will not be a solution for everyone. Even the one you choose today is likely to fail you at some point.
I want those with whom I want to interact with to be accessible regardless of what platform I or they choose. I want to be able to leave one platform for another without losing my relationships along the way.
People matter to me more than platforms.

will the Internet fail us at some point? is it not a solution for everyone? are you planning to move to a platform off of the Internet?
I look at fedi as a social layer on the open web. I want it that fully integrated. absolutely zero walls. all that's really stopping us is getting all the money easily, directly and automatically from the consumers to the creators in amounts everybody is happy with. the separate platforms exist to manage the money. for now.

@wjmaggos This is what I mean, though - I don't want a forum, I want multiple forums built and operated by different entities that integrate over open protocols. I don't want to dictate where folks feel comfortable accessing that network because that's an impossible task to take on.
