I realized with a jolt yesterday that I understand things like, 401(a), 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), 529, the different limits and rules of each, and I’m not a CPA or tax attorney

As an immigrant, I’ve had to teach myself how shit works. Tax law and immigration law, mostly.
It sucks, but I’m also proud that I put in the work to learn the stuff I wish I didn’t have to know.

Everywhere else I’ve lived, they just tell me how much tax to pay and I pay it. It’s over in a few minutes. There’s no tax season. There’s just logging in and clicking the thing.

@skinnylatte apparently companies like TurboTax actually lobby the government to keep taxes convoluted so people have to keep buying their product

@waitworry yep

@skinnylatte my wife told me that as a child she got roped into helping all of her mom's friends file their taxes because she had a better grasp of English.
-
@tedmielczarek this is talked about a lot in immigrant communities. The first child’s many, many administrative tasks because of English proficiency

@skinnylatte In Germany, taxes are automatically subtracted from your wages & sent to the tax office and you can reclaim a small part of them for deductables you might be able to claim.

@madalex like everywhere else, except here. This is by design
