I am really wondering if the big budget games industry was based on an unsustainable model and we're now seeing a sudden and violent adjustment to a new equilibrium state.
Given the size of budgets and staff for their games that still turn out very meh compared to indie games, that seems quite plausible.
Though alternatively, it always seems perfectly possible that the bigwigs have figured out a scheme how they can line their own pockets by harming their companies capacities to produce games.

It's REALLY hard to make something which stands alone, and potentially existing leadership teams aren’t the right fit for that type of project.

@yora I think a lot of companies did go for an unsustainable model.
Targeting a trend with a development life cycle longer than trends exist isn’t a great strategy. Now, the reason to target a trend isn’t purely from up top, I’m sure designers and others were actually interested in making these games.
But if you want to jump on a bandwagon you’ll have to be fast (see how it’s done in mobile). Or you build something that can stand alone
