After I refused a bribe to remove a @web3isgreat
-
@molly0xfff so to summarize, Web3 is going great, ain't it?
-
@molly0xfff @web3isgreat fun stuff! How much did they offer you?
-
@merlin @web3isgreat $400 for both the tweet and the website post
-
This is another plus to hosting your own work, by the way. They can still take it up the chain to my service providers, but I don’t have to worry about filing a counterclaim with the webhost because I AM the webhost.
-
@molly0xfff @web3isgreat About how long after starting Web3 is GJG did it occur to you “at some point I will enter a regime where I might need to retain legal counsel”
-
@jimfl i’m trying to remember which came first, the “cease and decease” notice i received from cryptoland or the angry DMs from the owner of the bored ape i use in the logo
-
@molly0xfff @web3isgreat Was reporting on a sim-swapper who got recorded and put on a podcast. A day later, their podcast got taken down through a fake copyright demand that said the podcast had copyrighted music in the background, when it clearly didn't. They know a lot of platforms will just cave and remove the disputed content, and only ask after the fact if the person who posted it has any objections.
-
@briankrebs yep, the DMCA takedown process is unfortunately abused so easily.
-
@molly0xfff Time to file a DMCA takedown request against them?

@molly0xfff @web3isgreat it's also fun to check the "about" on that page... and the contact, and the "follow us" section, and everything like that. A really serious news resource. They even have a "legal" email address!

@molly0xfff @web3isgreat by the expressive number of posts in August, from many different websites, I'm pretty sure this individual has sent similar emails to dozens of other authors.

@fmors yep, have heard from two other crypto news outlets that they've received similar requests
-
@molly0xfff This "Michael Woods" needs to enjoy the consequences of "under penalty of perjury".

Mhmm.
The author of such sparkling legal prose as "I would like to draw your attention towards I have one copyrighted content" and "This page content has been copied from our website !!" definitely also wrote the article in question.
-
update: the “lawyer” is now offering me $100 less than the previous guy to delete the post

@molly0xfff y'know I'm starting to think he isn't a lawyer...
-
@molly0xfff What exactly is their game there? Do they make so much of advertising that the 100 USD for being the only ones hosting your content is realistic? Or do they never plan to actually pay you?
-
@HeptaSean they’re just trying to get the post taken down. i assume most people doing this kind of DMCA fraud delete the posts later on so they’re not adding to the pile of content this guy doesn’t want online, but this seems like a pretty budget bin operation lol
-
@molly0xfff Ah, so, they get paid by the subject of the article who wants it completely gone? That makes half sense.
-
@HeptaSean yep
