An Open Letter by 86 descendants of Dietrich #Bonhoeffer
“We are horrified to see how Dietrich Bonhoeffer's legacy is increasingly being distorted and misused by far-right anti-democrats, xenophobes and religious agitators. As direct descendants of the seven siblings of the theologian and resistance fighter executed by the Nazis, we can testify on the basis of family tradition that he was a peace-loving, liberal-minded philanthropist. He would never have seen himself in the vicinity of right-wing extremist, violent movements that are trying to appropriate him today. On the contrary, he would have criticized precisely these attitudes.
A key figure in this abuse is Eric Metaxas, whose biography of Bonhoeffer, first published in the USA in 2010, sold millions of copies. In it, he narrowed the view of Bonhoeffer's life and turned him into a pious evangelical.“🧵 1/5
