@infobeautiful Would love to see a graph for Irn Bru, especially over time. I used to love that stuff as a kid, but when I tried it a couple of years ago it was so sweet I couldn't drink it. Disgusting.

@meercat0 @infobeautiful I guess the UK introduced a regulation, a few years back, that resulted in a reduction of sugar in soft drinks.
The EU does not enforce similar rules, still some countries do. -

@ryanc @bardnet @infobeautiful oh, so itβs not really less sweet if it has less sugar

@meercat0 @bardnet @infobeautiful correct, if it has less sugar it's probably just as sweet and as a bonus causes cancer

Aspartame hazard and risk assessment results released
Assessments of the health impacts of the non-sugar sweetener aspartame are released today by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA).

Apparently the current scientific consensus is "probably fine at reasonable intake levels", but artificial sweeteners still taste weird and give me headaches.

@aroom @meercat0 @bardnet @infobeautiful when I was a kid anything with saccharine had a "may cause cancer" warning on it, and those suspicions die hard

@macronencer @infobeautiful Here's the 22 versions:
Much less sugar now, but of course offset by sweeteners, so it's hard to tell whether it's actually sweeter now or if your taste buds have changed over time.

@gunchleoc @infobeautiful I mean, I wasn't actually around in 1901 But yes, point taken! And perhaps the recipe in the 1970s wasn't that different.
Sweeter, or my taste buds? I expect it's a bit of both. Hard to notice changes in one's own perception and/or physiology as they happen so slowly.
