I feel like my family doesn't really understand what I do professionally, so it's always fun listening to them describe it to their friends. 'she fixes computers' is something that comes up very often
In SF, I live above a Vietnamese Chinese noodle shop where the family that runs it has become my stand-in family here. I just heard them explain it to their 80 year old parents.. 'she fixes computers'
(I don't mind, btw! It's just very fun)

@skinnylatte "computer stuff, but not like in a way where i know how to fix _your_ computer" is the idea i have been striving to convey to my entire family for some time now.

@brennen @skinnylatte Same.

@skinnylatte both of my parents are COBOL-era programmers and they cant seem to understand what i do either, but having just enough preliminary knowledge to make the misunderstandings annoying/amusing
currently i get biyearly, out of nowhere text asking "so do you know how to build compilers now?" mom i have worked on SEVERAL

@atsuzaki wow! that's definitely a twist
