I don't think it's anything new to have expats coming to Canada from America. It has probably been a thing since the USA decided to be its own thing. But with @GottaLaff and other examples like the two people here, and with the focus on women's rights and the rights of LGBTQ2S people under threat, perhaps today is a little bit closer to what it might have been like during the Vietnam days and draft-dodgers.

@GottaLaff I am always reminded though these days, that it is often a huge 'flex' of privilege to be able to move away from one’s home country (something I've considered myself!). It's two sides of the same coin. One side you have relatively wealthy folks who can land an in-demand job or retire in their country of choice, and on the other side, you have the desperate. People with no choice but to flee their homes to try to do what is best for their families. Countries happily take in the wealthy folks... but the poor. Maybe not.

@chris I think of that often

@GottaLaff I am sure you do. I know I would. And I apologize, the comment wasn't directed at you specifically, Mastodon did that when I replied to myself. It was just meant generally.

@chris @GottaLaff not only privileged but often willing to take downgrades to their careers…another kind of privilege.

@chris @GottaLaff
I was part of that wave, myself, arriving at Douglas crossing March 26, 1968. Not sure it will ever again be like that because of the nature of the relationship between Canada and other countries, and most particularly, because of the transcendent and all-encompassing nature of the polycrises. -
