There is a lesson to be learned here, which is that loyalty is not a thing you can compel from people. You just can't. The harder you try, the less loyal you will make them. It's like the line from Star Wars: the more you tighten your grip, the more people will slip through your fingers.
Loyalty has to be earned. There's no other way to get it.

Like: if you want leaks, the absolute best way to produce them is to announce a heavy-handed crackdown on leaks. Nothing will induce every member of your team to add a journalist to their phone's contact list more efficiently than that

@jalefkowit Not sure if that's true. Apple seems to run a tight-ish ship.
Of course, they have a whole-ass team of very aggro internal security people keeping tabs on that stuff.

@mhoye Apple secures its peoples' loyalty by paying them extremely well, letting them work on interesting projects, and giving them a mission-oriented culture you don't get in many places. Silence is understood as the cost of admission. People mostly give it voluntarily, because they think it's worth what they get in return. (I probably wouldn't, but lots of very smart people do.)
They do have the aggro internal security people, as you note, but if they also didn't have buy-in from most employees no amount of internal security people would be able to stop the leaks. It would tear the company apart to try.

@jalefkowit @mhoye as I said when I was at the "bird house", leaks happen when staff lose trust in management.

@jalefkowit I remember that quote from the end of Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark…

@travisfw Yes. That was the joke
